Middle school metal trio sign $1.7 million record deal with Sony Music

Brooklyn, New York based middle school metal trio, Unlocking The Truth, have inked a record deal with Sony Music potentially worth $1.7 million, according to a report from the New York Daily News. The band are guaranteed two albums, with a $60,000 advance on the first, and up to $350,000 for the second. If the efforts prove fruitful, the band could reap the full benefits of the six-record, million dollar-plus contract.

Comprised of 13 year old guitarist, Malcolm Brickhouse, 13 year old bassist, Alec Atkins, and 12 year old drummer, Jarad Dawkins, Unlocking The Truth began making waves after a video of them performing in Times Square made its way around both inside and outside of the metal community. Dawkins' mother, Tabatha Dawkins, spoke with the New York Daily News on the boys' opportunity saying, "What started out as play dates went to Times Square, and now this. It’s been one great thing after another.” She added in regards to their schooling, "School work comes first. If their school work is not done, they don’t play."

I was going to poke fun at them for being kids, but they get a free pass because metal music is fucking badass!

Well, I can see one of them not finishing their work one day... But then their parent lets them play anyways.

After they ink that deal, it will probably switch to, "don't worry about your homework, go practice." Not that I blame them.

Honestly, the video on the website wasn't exactly mind-blowing. The studio is probably trying to capitalize on the buzz along with some professional training and writing. I'd bet my neighbor's dog that we won't see that sixth album release.

Guaranteed 2, with possibility of 6.

I read another site where they were speculating part of the reason for the deal could be because they are black and there aren't many black metal artists, so Sony think they could potentially bring in a load of new fans.

Well we do need a next gen justin bieber to hate when they grow up and stop being cute and eventually do drugs, punch paparazzi, skip school, make documentries for the extra dollars, go on twitter rampages and get forgotten in the abyss of life.

Nice investment in a very young band, but lots of qualifiers on the numbers. I am sure if they are successful Sony throw whole weight behind them, but need to prove themselves. Personally happy to see bunch of kids playing metal get signed when seems like all teen acts are pop (I admit, been out of the music scene for years now though).
