The internet has made people into huge wusses. That is certainly part of the problem. So has Facebook. I cancelled mine a year or 2 ago because I couldn't stand the bitching, and complaining, asshole mentality, insulting, political propaganda, picture's of people's meals etc. etc. and don't miss it even one little bit.
Honestly moreso than anything else though. is the sheer size of the gaming industry currently. There are so many more people gaming now than when SNES was up against Genesis. Like exponentially more people, so naturally you are going to have more arguing and assholes when you have a larger group.
Also, I think certain practices of modern gaming companies invoke more emotional responses out of people. It is different when you think back to when you could just read Nintendo power and PC gamer and go out and buy a complete game for NES or a 486. Now you constantly have to wonder if company XYZ is going to release something broken, with a huge Day 1 patch, with on-disc DLC, with a season pass, an online pass, pre-order bonuses that vary by store, use the public to beta test after the game comes out and try to tweak it, annualize said game, etc. etc. etc. I think a lot of these new practices piss people off and some of them let it get too excessive or decide to take it out on fellow gamers.
Also, entitlement. Yeah the entitlement among early 20's and younger people current days has carried over into everything. It isn't just gaming. But you are not alone, there are gamers who buy whatever consoles they want be it all of them or none of them, and don't pledge fake allegiance to a corporation that does not care about them.
