I don't really think it does. People may say the combat's boring, but I think they're blinded by their love of Zelda. You may plow through tons of fodder enemies now, but cutting octoroks and stalchilds before wasn't exactly a deep combat system either. I personally like how Koei Tecmo has included many of the staples of the Zelda franchise and used Warriors elements to undermine some of the more tired tropes.
For example, Queen Zelda is a f*ckin boss leading her troops in battle instead of the hapless princess you're used to saving. Puzzles for the most part seem to have been done away with, but that's fine because most puzzles in mainline Zeldas had devolved into "use new item here." There may not be as much exploration, but there are still secrets hidden throughout, and there were already starting to be restrictions on where you could go and which dungeons you tackled first anyway. You can't blame Hyrule Warriors for that.
