Also, there's a big missing chunk of 24M players from the original Xbox

PS2+XBOX = 184M

PS360 = 160M

PS2+Xbox weren't at 184m when the PS3 launched, they were at 142m in March 2007.

PS360 is already at 165m and will probably reach 184m in the next two or three years.

19 million sales on older consoles? Doubtful.

Sony sold 40 million PS2s after the PS3 launch.

PS3 and 360 together should be able to sell at least half of that... All it takes is a long overdue price cut.

Those arbitrary measurements are the reason Nintendo is doing so bad right now. They failed to see that their console was built with casuals, who had long abandoned the platform, and thus made the mistake of marketing the Wii U as a casual console.

Numbers don't show everything, not even close.

Not even close. Wii U is not a casual console, but a failed casual console. Instead of going full with the tablet controller they went with something that is not a traditional controller and neither a tablet.

Also, there's nothing for those casuals to play that they haven't played before on Wii. Unlike the hardcore market who can eat the same game over and over but with just different name or characters, they demand new experiences, like Just Dance, Kinect Sports, Mario Kart Wii (using motion), Wii Fit or Wii Sports or the revival of classics like 2D Marios (NSMBWii)

Wii Play on the other hand failed to reach those heighs because is basically a Mario Party with Miis.

Casual gamers demand new experiences? No, they demand cheap, easy to pick up and play games. Casual gamers don't make gaming a habit, which is why they are casual. The Wii had tons of cheap games and game packages, but then mobile platforms came around with tons of free games that people can play whenever they want.

Those people will never buy a console again. We may never see another generation as strong as 7th gen, simply because the market has shrunk.

Pretty much dead on.

They are playing "new" games, they're just crap like Candy Crush Saga, Flappy Bird, and that Kim Kardashian game on iOS/Android.

Ur forgetting that PS2 was replaced after 5 years, while PS3/360 were replaced after 7-8 years so they likely wont have the legs of PS2.

PS2 was also much cheaper than the current consoles, and was the most appealing console of all time.

It's certainly possible, but unlikely over the next 2-3 years, which is what you said. PS2 took 7 years to reach 40 million extra units.

When Sony Wins you dont need another system because its that damn good.

No, it was the dark ages when I joined this site and Nintendo was leading. Now it is happy, prosperous place to be.

I can't even imagine that. Things are good as they are, long may they continue!

Cheers *chugs huge gulp of beer than takes a shot of rum.* Bless these times! You are lucky you missed the gaming great depression of wii dominance. It was a sad, sad time. Things are more in balance with nature now.

No it did better when Sony was, look at the ps1-ps2 era vs the gimmick era of the wii

Are you sure?

5th gen - Leader PS1 (Sony)

3DO - 2M

Atari Jaguar - 250k

Sega Saturn - 9.4M

PlayStation - 102M

Nintendo64 - 32.93M

Total - 146.58M

6th gen - Leader PS2 (Sony)

Dreamcast - 10.6

PlayStation2 - 160M (?)

NintendoGameCube - 22M

Xbox - 24M

Total - 216.6M

7th gen - Leader Wii (Nintendo)

Xbox360 - 84M

PS3 - 84M (?)

Wii - 101.06M

Total - 269.60M

Less systems more consoles.

The gimmick is good for a short period of time but long time, that's an other story yes?

Then industry needs the Nintendo gimmicks. Anyway, Nintendo being leader and with gimmicks made the other two consoles sell better than last generations losers.

That's nonsense, Sony & Microsoft sold thier numbers cause they catered to the core gaming community, the wii hacked its way into the casual market who now have abandoned Nintendo for smartphones. If Nintendo didnt have the wii mote last generation the console would have flopped and Sony & Microsoft would have only sold slightly better than they did.

Not really. The Gamecube had a library that was almost on par with the PS2, and if you skipped those games then you skipped almost half of the awesomeness of 6th gen, imo.
