Yet only one game, YW2, has passed the million mark. Japan is quite irrelevant now.

I guess its easy to run down Japan when you compared it to all of North America( 500 million people) and Europe (525 million people). The point is don't expect 120 millon people to produce the same game sales as markets 5 times the size of it.

Also Japan is one country. Europe has many.

8-10 years ago the population of Japan was about critically the same. However the rate of games per person has diminuished significantly ever since then, from a console/handheld point of view. Back then, an unknown fart could just easily get past the million mark. Nowadays even the very best franchises struggle to reach that number and only Christmas seem to be the real moment sales shake, but the rest of the year? Pretty stale.

Yes, Japan has a very low birthrate and its population is going to shrink signficiantly. However, if you look at the indivdual markets in Europe,France, U.K., Germany, etc. the level of games sales they produce is lot less than Japan even when considering the bigger population in Japan. Even looking at the 2013 sales in Japan refutes your point that even the biggest franchises struggle to get to a million there as Pokemon, Monster Hunter, and Animal Crossing all crossed a million in less than a day.
4. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U: 512,467)
