Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Microsoft ever win a gen?

Would be very difficult with their approach. One has to have global appeal to win any sales contest nowadays. It's like the constant crazy comparisons of the superbowl and world cup viewing audience on U.S. news outlets. Anyone with sense can see why the super bowl will never be a match.

Last gen, they started off right, even usurping some of the fickle Japanese crowd from Sony. Sadly, they just couldn't keep up the effort so the system died off like it's predecessor. It also didn't help that Nintendo's new strategy caught everyone napping.

This gen, they didn't even bother trying in many regions. With the rhetoric coming from their new CEO, xbox360 will probably go down as the best Xbox so the glory days may be in the past but to be fair I don't think Sony has quite beaten what the ps1 offered either.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Do you see Microsoft ever winning a gen or do you think it'll just alternate between Nintendo and Sony?

Not at this point.  Everything MS ever does that isn't Windows/Office is a half@ss attempt at leeching off an existing market.  Name a product, and I will tell you how.

Until they commit and get some managment who actually care about what they are selling, they will always be a small part of the markets they are in (Cellphone, console, tablet).

You could tell me how the Surface tablet and Windows Phone fit into that definition :). And they have been in the gaming industry longer than Sony so why wouldn´t a console be the natural progression? And btw, they have been almost as succesful as Nintendo these last two generations, and sold equal to Sony last gen, so how come they are the ones who aren´t commited?

-The surface tablet was a great idea, but they announced it a year before it came out.  By the time they released it there were other better and cheaper Windows 8 alternatives.  Tablets aren't new, Apple found how to make them popular and MS only jumped on the band wagon when they saw other's make money.

-It's the same thing with the Windows Phone.  They doubted smartphones until Apple made them work, and then jumped on the bandwagon again.

-They have been in the gaming industry by default, not by choice  (Developers know most people have Windows).  However instead of capitalizing on Window's gaming success, they got greedy when they saw the PS One's success.  The original Xbox was a "Me Too!" device that had more crap thrown on it (Like the Surface and Windows Phone).

They don't create markets, they leech off them.  Almost every other tech giant I can think of created a few revolutionaty fields they continue to compete in till this day.

- I have owned ALOT of tablets, and none of them comes close to the Surface in quality. MS actually worked with tablets long before Apple entered the market: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Tablet_PC.  What you are talking about is packaging, Apple made tablets popular by creating an image around them. MS primarily made the software but it just goes to show that they have been dedicated to this area for a very long time.

- Once again, you are missing that MS has been in the smartphone/PDA bussines longer than Apple or Google: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone. And btw, they bought Nokias phone division! That is not leeching, that is commitment to the industry.

- In what way was the original XBox a "me too"-device? It was the first console with a built in harddrive, they revolutionzed online gaming with XBL and offered broadband out of the box. They also started years befored, by making the operating system for Dreamcast, just as how Sony got into the industry by first collborating with Nintendo. So by your way of reasoning, Sony are leechers aswell?

I do not question that MS copies ideas from others (everyone does) but seeing at things like Kinect, they are also pushing the industry forward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nlk6HhDpDw.

And to finish of with this silly "leeching", Apple wouldn´t even be in this industry today, had it not been for MS: http://lowendmac.com/musings/12mm/microsoft-saves-apple.html

Yeah MS made tablets, and they were heavy, weak garbage.  iOS is exactly what people wanted.  Maybe not you, but most people.  It is not just the image lol because android tablets also destroy surface in sales.

Again you don't get the difference.  They tried some crappy abomination no one wanted, and then Apple/Google stepped in and made something good.  Then, once they saw what worked they copied it as best they could while adding a few unimportant.

The PS2 came out nearly 2 years before the Xbox and had the option of an HDD.  Otherwise the Xbox was the same thing except with a unified online component (The only original thing they came up with).

On the other hand the PSOne was the first console to really advertise gaming to Adults (Something Xbox copied like crazy).  You can thank Sony for correctly asserting that there are adults out there who want mature experiences.

I do not question that MS copies ideas from others (everyone does) but seeing at things like Kinect, they are also pushing the industry forward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nlk6HhDpDw.

Kinect was the correct(ish) implementation of the Eye Toy.  It's too bad they never followed through on it.

This. Microsoft never pushed anything. They just brought PC gaming to consoles and took the Kinect after Sony turned down the project.

Kill Xbox One early and make a new console with a new brand. It may work or completely fail.

For Nintendo, Gamecube completely failed but Wii won big and again Wii U not doing so well.

Sure.

If they wanted they could just buy a generation. They made too many mistakes with the Xbone reveal and are still suffering for it. Who knows what happens the rest of this gen. Though it is funny to see threads like this talk about how bad Sony started and they eventually passed Xbox yet after what... 9 months this gen is done LOL.

They could pull a 360 and start next gen off early with a bad ass console.

The only way they win globally is if this ever happens:
