Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Microsoft ever win a gen?

No. You can't win a gen based off one region.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Nope, too late, they didn't lose the 7th generation though

Several things wrong here:

- The post contradicts itself

- They did lose the 7th generation

Nobody won or lost the 7th generation. Wii sold lots of console but made less money and destroyed their image. PS3 and X360 sold about the same number of consoles and games.

However no, neither Xbox, Xbox 360 or the Xbox One will have won any generation.

i guess you have never heard of the "game boy", Nintendos handheld consoles are making so much money for Nintendo which you cannot discount from this discussion, the  thread is titled "Will Microsoft ever win a gen?" handhelds are part of console generations too and it just happens than Nintendo are kings in that area, the Wii weather you like it or not selling over 100 million consoles marks it as the blatent winner of the 7th gen, it was also the cheapest to manufacture so Nintendo made next to no losses on it so where on earth did you get the idea they made less money from it!

Current PC build:

Asus Z97I-Plus, i5 4790K @ 4.6ghz, EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 1377/1853/124%, Corsair Vengence Pro 2400mhz 2x 8192mb, Corsair RM850, Corsair H80i, 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, 750GB Seagate Momentus XT SSHD, 320GB Weston Digital HDD, Corsair 230T, Corsair K50 Raptor, HP XQ500AA mouse, Windows 10 Pro 64bit. iiyama Pro Lite G2773HS 120Hz 1Ms G2G gaming monitor.

Nobody won 7th gen? Bro whoever sells most consoles = winner, thats the definition...

They can't win unless they make serious gains in Europe. You can't win a global gen when you are only strong in 1 of the 3 markets, even if it is the biggest one.

I'm almost sure sony is taking the same path as microsoft, sooner or later. So next gen maybe microsoft can surprise us or maybe during this current gen but i doubt it. Sony has already won this gen unless they make a huge mistake and microsoft use it wisely.

" They can't win unless they make serious gains in Europe. You can't win a global gen when you are only strong in 1 of the 3 markets, even if it is the biggest one."

It was getting bigger with the 360 in Europe, but it's selling poorly with the one ( mainly because of their previous mistake i think, european forget hardly a mistake :p ).

Winning is pathectic in my opinion. Microsoft could still have a very successful that even though they might not be the best-selling last gen, they could of easily have made the most money.

up to this point microsoft sure as hell has support the xbox one much better than sony supporting the ps4. the ps4 needs a good update so damn bad, its not half what a ps3 is with functionality.

As far as a happy customer goes, im happy with the xbo but frustrated with the ps4. besides sales, ms is winning this generation in my opinion.

which wins my money is what i care about.

This is a head scratcher. Neither system launched with all of the functionality that the previous consoles had, at the end. The support for both, realistically, is basically even. When I think of "support", I think of games and media, which again, they're about equal, right now.

So, if you're saying the PS4 is half the PS3 (which isn't true anyway, especially given the PS4 does plenty the PS3 didn't), then the X1 must be in the same situation.

xbo/ps3 - 3d blue rays, ps4 nope

xbo/ps3 - can play mp3s, ps4 nope

xbo - can use an external HD, ps4 nope and that is important when i am running out of space even with discs.

xbo - can change gamertag, ps4 nope

something ps3 that none have as far as i know, DLNA support.

what am i missing? All I am saying is sony needs to get on it for what these guys are charging for these "next gen" systems. And I see MS bending over getting the xbo inline and up to par much quicker.

No, Xbox brand is dead in Europe and Japan.Xbox is winding down operations in Europe, talk of selling off "non core" divisions etc.MS are obviously not happy with the performance of XB1.

Dead in Europe? Wishful thinking.

Japan doesn't really matter. Xbox 360 was a great success without Japan.

It should also be noted Sony is struggling in Japan. They aren't buying enough Vitas or PS4s.

They do if they want to win a gen. Which is the point of this thread. Do you think MS could win a gen? Marketshare wise? I dont think you answered the question

Imo no for the following reasons:

- Playstation and Nintendo are too strong a brand WW, one seems to lead while the other slows MS down. Both these competitors have a certain identity that another platform doesn't have (you see this in their first party titles) while MS' image for the platform is basically being very mainstream (online, GTA, FPS etc...) something that another platform can emulate.

- Both of MS' competitors have strong first party support that have mainstream power that only Halo in MS' arsenal's can match.

- Last gen was their best chance because they killed the Xbox off after 4 years to get a full year headstart, what killed them in the end is that the last third of the gen they seemed lost, it's like they know how to start well but aren't as good at finishing a gen which is why the X1's slower start is worrying, being market leader is a marathon not a sprint. This may be a result of the first party issue.

- One outstanding issue is that I'm not sure if MS are adept at adapting to market changes like the other two, how ever hard the situation is for their competitors they've shown an ability to adapt to tough situations. Currently the mainstream is more western catered which obviously benefits MS heavily if the market mainstream was to change (which it probably will in future gens) I wonder if they can adapt to a situation where a market is catered less to what favours them.
