A Malaysian airliner reportedly with 295 people on board has crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia Airlines said it had lost contact with Flight MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukraine, it said in a tweet.

An aviation source in Moscow told Reuters the plane had been found burning on the ground in east Ukraine.

It had failed to enter Russian airspace, the source said.

Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying the plane had been hit by a missile at an altitude of 10,000m (33,000ft).

A number of military planes have been shot down by missiles in recent weeks over eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatist rebels have been fighting government forces.

The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports of the crash and was "urgently working to establish what has happened".

OMG, Malaysia Airlines again?! How is that possible? Its not even a major airline.

Very sad that all those people lost their lives.

I've just seen it on the news. It doesn't seem good. And there's many speculations and confirmations that it was a missile that brought down the plane. God bless the victims and their families.

A missile at 33,000 ft? Is that possible with the tech the rebels have?

It could be a missile defense system.

Damn that's worrying and sad.

This could turn pretty nasty.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

The Interpreter reports that the Ukrainian military has been claiming that separatists have advanced missiles for a week after the transport plane went down.

An adviser to the Ukraine Interior Minister says the passenger plane was shot down by a Russian-made Buk ground-to-air missile systems.

If this is true then the blame will go to Russia for suppying these to the rebels.

Pretty sad

I will wait to hear more and won't like to speculate about it since it's really just confusion right now even for the news stations who have their sources.

The key is that most warplanes fly at lower altitudes for operations, so garden-variety military operations don't need missiles that could take out passenger jets.

Something's very fishy here.

Yeah this seems very strange. I just don't get how Malaysia Airlines can have 2 major accidents within months.
