Forums - General Discussion - The Tesla Model 3 - The most important car of this generation

Today Tesla revealed plans for the Model 3 to be released in 2017.  Why is this massive announcement that could change infrastructure and energy in the world?

Simple, the Tesla Model 3 is aiming for a $35K price point when it releases in 2017.  Compared tot he Model S being $70-80K this is an enormous reduction in the buy in of the electric car.

Aren't there other electric cars? What makes Tesla's Model 3 so special?  Again, a simple answer, range. The Tesla Model 3 has over twice the range of its competitors exceeding 200 miles on a charge.  Also, Tesla is building more and more power stations around the United States for 20 minute charges when people go on trips. By 2017 the goal is 80% of Americans would be covered by these charging stations.  200 miles also easily covers 95% of commuters as the car can be charged over night at your house.

Why is this important?  For decades the United States has poured everything into the infrastructure model of roads and automobiles.  The fuel source for 99% of drivers is gasoline or diesel.  Lack of competition has left us at the mercy of oil prices.  Electricity on the other hand can be produced numerous ways, oil, gas, wind, wave, hydro, nuclear, etc.  Competition means lowering of energy prices and getting from point A to B costing less.

We will see the Model 3 in full glory in 2016 when unvieled to the public, but my feeling given Tesla's track record is it will also be appealing to look at.

How about you? Are you excited by the Model 3's possibilities? Am I overstating it that it could be the most revolutionary car since Ford's Model T?

To be honest I can't wait until the day Solar power has become efficient and all cars are electric. Tired of giving money to scumbags to buy gas am I right?

We also have like a million rivers. In the last 1.5 months alone Illinois area has gotten over 10 inches of rain ( like 500 Meters or something for you European people), we can produce enough energy to support the entire planet if need be. We also have plenty of food to support the planet. Surprised as hell that we have not been invaded more often. Plus, unlike China, we do not need any of it. We just throw it all away, or miss manage it all.

So when the worlds oil supplies run out, look for America to become a super super power that everyone grovels to once again. For now....keep hating on us. We can be patient at times... Now give me my god dammned Quadruple triple expresso before I rage quite Starbucks!

For anyone who has seen Weird Al's Word Crimes song, can you spot they mistake that he mentions in his video in my fake rant above?

It's espresso.

Yes, the point is going to electric would make the United States energy independent.  Even if 25% of cars on the road had this model would be a seismic shift in the energy equation.

Then what will happen to all the gas stations? jobs? jobs that all the products these gas stations sell? Will I slowly have to start going to super markets if I just want a quick drink, lottery ticket, Condoms, Cheese and beef stick, etc?

The world will be so different when this happens. No more 7/11's.

there would still be gas stations they will have stations you will plug in your car for electricity instead..

I actually mentioned and linked that Tesla is building charging stations to encourage people to buy their cars.  Imagine a trip where you path zero dollars to get from point A to B because these Tesla charging centers can charge your Tesla for FREE (least for now).
