Buying Nokia was a huge mistake, especially considering the massive price they paid. It's probably also the reason Ballmer had to leave.

But whatever, every giant is bound to fall sometime. The higher they rise, the deeper they'll fall. I mean, if someone told me in 2004 Nokia was practically dead in 10 years I would have laughed pretty hard. It can happen so quickly, even with massive corporations, we all know what happened to Sony in the last couple of years. Can't wait to see the downfall of Apple!

MS's market cap rose on the news. Investors like they are streamlining things. Windows Phones sell best in developing markets in the lower price segments. Year on year gains are quite impressive if you look them up.

Market cap isn't always a good indicator for reality. We learnt that lesson with the internet bubble in the 90s. Granted, it's another thing with Microsoft, but it's still impossible that Nokia will ever make up for those 7.2 billion they paid for them. Most likely, they will just keep generating losses, even with all those jobs cut. So I still think that buying Nokia was a mistake.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Wow, that is a lot and its unfortunate for the people who will end up with a pink slip but i think it is the right move for MS.

@Bolded:  That already happened.  Apple had their fall and phoenix revival.  They are due for another fall in about 10 years or better.

As it looks like nobody remembered to write the mandatory post, I'll do it.

M$ D0M3D!!! =8-O

It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it.

Wait so Ms went from increasing their workforce by 25% to 30% in a year to only 12 to 15%...
cause bottom line MS has more worker now even after they cut 18k than they did last year...
MS is going up on all fronts... WP, Bing, win8, Xbox, cloud, etc... Than plan is merely a refocus that will further their traction.... Yet still grow the company... Brownie points will fall in cascade next week after Q4 results... MS is actually doing great and that cut while sucky for the employees concerned is absolutely great news from MS

It's good for MS competitors that will hire them too.

Its much better for the cut employees who will get a nice serverance package and get picked up by another company.
