Forums - Sales Discussion - Releasing Big Games

Normally this time of year, we would find out at E3 when the big three would release their big holiday games.  But E3 is completely different now.

If you were Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft when would you want your big games and your big third party games released? After all, there are limits on the number of hardware moving guarenteed hits.  Games of this magnitude tend to preclude gamers from getting information on other games, so they must be spaced out accordingly.  To me, these are games that will sell 3 million+ copies worldwide.  In 2007, I believe these console games will meet that sales standard by the start of 2008:

Smash Brothers, Mario Galaxy, Madden (360/PS3/Wii/PS2), Halo 3, GTA IV (360/PS3), Metal Gear Solid 4, Singstar, Wii Health, Wii Music, Ratchet & Clank.  Games like Assassin's Creed, Too Human, Guitar Hero 3, Heavenly Sword and Killzone 2 may have a shot at 3 million by the end of the year as well.

If it was me deciding for any of the hardware companies, I would want momentum to ramp up monthly.  So I would have it like this:

August - Madden, Singstar, Too Human, Wii Music

September - Ratchet & Clank, Wii Health, Assassin's Creed, Metroid Prime 3

October - GTA IV, Super Mario Galaxy, Killzone 2

November - Guitar Hero 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Halo 3, Heavenly Sword, Smash Brothers Brawl

I think the console makers are afraid to show their hand until someone else releases dates first.

When would you bring out the big games?

E3 is different now, but I don't expect that it will (dramatically) change the number of games that are announced ... E3 changed because some Yahoo who had no reason to be there was taking gameplay time away from the media and retail representatives that the show was (initially) created for.

very good question, when to bring them out, The holidays are always reaping, but then again if you continue to release good games every month or 2 then that would be a route as well.

Nintendo should release Corruption at the end of Summer, by the end of August, then SSBB at beginning of october or the week before Halo 3 and SMG the week before Black Friday

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I know MS is pushing for a September release for Halo to clear room for GTA IV and some of their other games in the Holiday season. Halo is one of those games that is completely independent of the holiday cycle. People will buy it no matter when it comes out. They just can't release it in January. Any time between June and November is fine.

releasing big games is all about trying to steal the thunder away from the competitors..... it would be tough for any game to release in october because you know GTA is there.. August has always been madden..So that leaves september and November... Halo is slotted in september this year so i think killzone should move to either november or december or get pushed to early 2008.. or it might get overshadowed... metal gear can release in any month if it wanted too but the big sales would be in the holiday season

Nintendo is in a tough spot for releasing their games, the problem is their system moving games aren't going to have much effect when their systems are already moving as fast as they can. If they could release instantly, I would wait until supply starts looking like it's catching up to demand, wait until people start saying "The Wii drought is over", then release a game. Repeat x3, include one big release for Christmas and make sure you have a LOT of Wii's stockpiled and you'll sell every single Wii you make at huge speeds. Microsoft is kind of cruising right now, but their main problem will be releasing games that aren't cannibalised by Halo. They need to make sure they have a BIG holiday this year to stay on top, otherwise Nintendo will fly right by them and never look back. Simply put, release Halo ASAP, then when the wave starts fading off, release your other big guns for Christmas and you should have a big holiday. Sony is in trouble, people are losing interest in the PS3. I think they need to put their effort into one big push, get it back on people's radars. Around Christmas time, they need to combine a lot of big name games with a price cut, and hope people are feeling really generous. If they can get a huge holiday season, then they could set themselves on the road to recovery. anyway, that's just my opinion.

Question is .will Nintendo/Can Nintendo make enough wii's? , i mean it is already May and there is no letting up

And really how many Wii's would Nintendo have to stockpile (for the Holidays) Before they say "Ok we are prepared!"

One million? 2 million with a promise to make X amount weekly??

Thing is Nintendo's big games will likely have long legs, even if they release them while demand exceeds supply, it'll just keep being a draw, people will be lining up just like they did last year (it will be Wii launch part 2: this time the lines are longer)
