It is certainly overrated, as is anything that takes any inspiration, however slight, from Ayn Rand.

I liked it, so it says a lot because I think most modern shooters are shit. In a sea of generic FPS, one with a nice atmosphere stands out easily.

I agree that Bioshock 2 is better.

I remember I bought it when it first came out and really got into early but got burnt out and bored half way through it. Did the same with part 2. It wasn't until Infinite that I remained engaged long enough to complete a Bioshock game.

Not overhyped. Please hold your opinions until you play this game. I have never cared about two characters as much as I did with the Last of Us. Games like Bioshock and Half life 2 were great but lets face it. None of us cared about the generic protagonists. Dead Space is another game that is so awesome but the main character had zero personality.

That being said, sometimes I like a game with a non-descript protagonist. The game is supposed to be about me experiencing the adventure--not some character with a complicated backstory.

You just contradicted yourself...  Experiencing the adventure would be HL2 and Bioshock (heavy atmosphere, and brief story segments, lots of gameplay), and Last of Us would be "some character with a complicated backstory", as you said yourself "I have never cared about two characters as much as I did with The Last of Us".

I did not contradict myself. I said SOMETIMES I LIKE. Sometimes I like characters who are rich and well written. Sometimes I like to be Gordon Freeman who no one could give a damn about. Two different experiences. Both of which Iove.

This game and Condemned had me in astonishment. The atmosphere of both games were incredible. The ending boss was a complete failure tho. Utter disappointment. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy to easy. Can't even stress that enough.

Condemned was great but an easy final boss never disappoints me. Please see Singularity. One of the best single player campaigns and there is no last boss at all. Same thing as the original Darkness. You are so powerful at the end that you are basically an unstoppable juggernaut. Darksiders last boss was also a cakewalk as you are completely overpowered at the end. These are my favorite kinds of games. I play video games to feel empowered. Maybe just me?

Bioshock ranks pretty high in best FPS games ever. Unique gameplay, interesting setting and story, and visually holds up well.

all i thought was notable about BS1 was atmosphere. Ken Levine has said that despite him being proud of the game, he thought that it became outdated quickly, which i agree with, and that served as a basis for Infinite.

i'm in the relative minority that really didn't like BS1 yet loved Infinite.

I think that bioshock one is one of the best games ever made. It's definitely one of the definitive games of the generation.

Atmosphere was very good, and at the time of release it was a very smooth game. Bioshock 2 might be better to some people. But to a lot it is the "been there done that" attitude.

For example imo DW7 and DW7 XL and DW7 Empires was a lot better then DW6. But since it was already done earlier in the gen they were rated worse.

Same with FFXIII-2 and FFXIII.
