Snapdragon 855 should beat an 8-core Jaguar by a sizable margin.

Bandwidth is where things fall short though... The 855 will only offer about 34.13GB/s of bandwidth, which is going to limit it's gaming capabilities, especially at higher resolutions that the Playstation 4 will target.

GPU wise the Adreno is surprisingly capable and extremely efficient, more so than AMD's ageing Graphics Core Next architecture... But at the end of the day, the Playstation 4 has a sheer larger number of functional units which means it should win in every scenario.

Now when comparing Snapdragon against the Xbox One, things start to lean towards the Snapdragon a little more, but the Xbox One should still hold a slight edge in the GPU/Bandwidth department.

Nope snapdragon 855 is still far behind Xbox one.

Snapdragon 855 scores 11fps sustained performance, xbox one (Radeon 7770) does 30fps and according to anandtech this benchmark is very likely based on half-precision compute shaders which favor mobile phones heavily. The benchmark tests gpu only, a game will push the cpu and the gpu to the max which will further decrease performance.

Snapdragon 855 is not limited by memory bandwidth but by heat and is not close to xbox one.

You mean like the Wii, PS2, PS1, and DS made consoles obsolete?

Mobile gaming will never hinder console games. Different market, different games, and no matter how advanced they are, too many models will make it near impossible to optimize games to their full potential. This is why Mobile will never truly kill handhelds either, even of the future of handhelds is lived on through hybrid consoles like the Switch.

Console gaming will go through many changes over the decades, but it is much harder to kill than you think. Honestly I see no real threat to consoles until the internet is on par world wide to support streaming only. But even then, if enough people vote with their wallets we may just see a digital download option as well for those who would rather run the games natively. When that becomes the norm however, expect DRM out the ass.

So in short, you are wrong. It is further out than you think, and the threat is something completely different.

While true, your graph has a giant flaw: The test was made with the international version of the S10+, which uses an Exynos 9820 (hence the (E9820) behind the S10+), not a Snapdragon 855. But I don't think it will be much higher, maybe 2-3 FPS maximum.

Edit: Didn't see it was tested with both, my bad. But it still holds true that that just ain't enough.

CPU. Not GPU. ARM has long left Jaguar behind.

GPU is a different matter... Because whilst Adreno is more efficient and newer, it has less functional units.

An ARM SoC will always show it's limitations when it comes to graphics due to a myriad of reasons, you need to test each aspect individually, already recognized that the Xbox One will beat the Snapdragon 855 in GPU tasks.

The Snapdragon 855 Adreno GPU is certainly limited in-part by memory bandwidth which hampers texture and pixel fillrate which gets compounded at higher resolutions.

Keep in mind that the Xbox One has double the bandwidth of the Snapdragon 855... And it still struggles to hit and maintain 1080P... And that is before we take into account the ESRAM that gives it a boost as well.

"If the PS4 sells 100 million, consoles will become obsolete."

Is that to say that consoles will become obsolete if they don't start next-gen soon enough? Hm...

It's my opinion that something will need to change if console gaming is to stay competitive, as minor inconveniences are beginning to seem like major drawbacks when compared to competition that allows you to pick up and play a game anywhere. I can see products like Google Stadia taking a significant market share if all goes well.

The "wow" factor of a new generation of consoles is going to be mitigated by the early load blowing of the PS5 Pro and Xbox One X. They will need to rely more on new features and clever marketing than the strength of the console, unless they hold off until hardware is better (or sell a really expensive console).

I'm also very curious to see what Sony does to counter the Nintendo Switch.

This is exactly the reason why a PS5 won't be so much stronger than an Xbox One X. It's technically possible, but not for a price of 499 or even less.

Forget about the Pro and the X, its not like they gonna have exclusive or separate, they just play the games at 4K with slighty better graphics

look at this: https://www.vg247.com/2013/01/07/xbox-360-and-ps3-losses-total-8-billion-ex-sony-employee-paints-grim-future/

Sony was trying to avoid the miskates like the ones with PS3, Microsoft well wanted to go greedy in the first place with the stupid always on kinect, always on DRM and $100 more

So you complain about being underpowered, but you cant think about the price if wasnt underpowered

Forgot to include that into my previous reply, but what guarantee do we have that there will be no games which won't run on the base consoles? After all, when the next gen comes out, supporting the mid-gen upgrades will be way easier than the base consoles. While it's not going to happen anytime soon, I could see that happen in around 2021-2022. Or they run as well as many later games did on a base 3DS, they were technically running, but with singe-digit FPS and thus almost unplayable.

that would make them Sony and Microsoft greedy, like EA:

-Instead of making the Pro and X, why they couldnt haven made the PS4 and XB1 more powerful in the first place? Instead of the kinect for the XB1, why not just for more power, in fact Pro and X just make devs put more time on their games

-Look at this: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/09/08/ps4-pro-the-ultimate-faq/

Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games?
There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa.

Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son First Light, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more.

-Look at many games like Spiderman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jStRBmQ2CGo, Same frame rate, Same Graphics, just make the Pro feel cashgrab

If you didnt spend $599 on PS3, then you shouldnt care about the PS4 specs

Why is that? I waited two years to get my PS3.  Got the 80 GB CECHKxx version (non back compat phat) when it was like $499.  Still bought PS4 day one and PS4 Pro Day one.

At least the PS3 was very powerful when came out and there wasnt a stupid Pro version

The response to PS3 is why we couldn't have PS4 Pro and XBO X like consoles on day one. The mass market put the brakes on expensive, high end console gaming.

Don't buy into the hysteria around Pro and X adding to development. It takes very little time, and very few people to optimize for these mid gen upgrades.

As someone with PSVR and a 75" Display, I can assure you my PS4 Pro and XBO X do not feel like cash grabs in the least. Even if the only difference is resolution, having the Pro at 1440p vs 1080p on the OG unit makes a huge difference. I even find it worth while to play games on the X over the Pro if it means the difference between 1440p and 4K. Resolution alone makes a major difference the larger the display gets.
