Forums - Microsoft Discussion - No 1080p on Xbox One Due To Memory Bandwidth/ESRAM/RAM

Your thread title sucks, its like clickbait but you dont get paid.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Being 1080p is not everything. A game can look great without being 1080p, just look at nintendo. The only problem here is that its multyplats, its going to be the same game but at a higher resolution so its undeniably better. MS needs to come up with exclusives instead of trying to catch up with sony in multyplats visual.

This.

Forza, Destiny?

For you young people that have clearly not been around for decades like me, throughout history, when consoles launch, it always takes developers a couple years to "crack" them or tap the true potential of the console. This is why early gen games don't look as good as games that launch later in the generation. This is why Skyrim looks and plays better on consoles than Oblivion does. This is why Bioshock Infinite look better than Bioshock.

It's coincidentally reversed this generation. Last gen PS3's cell processor was awesome, but it was very difficult to develop on. It took developers a couple years to master it. Now it's reversed and Xbox One has a more complicated architecture.

As already mentioned, incompetence, laziness and lack of professional skill is the only reason for not reaching 1080p. Memory streaming and memory compression or just skillful and resource-efficient programming would make 1080p possible but the effort is rather high, at least with the current SDK tools.

Yet several games hs reached it, like Forza 5, Killer Instinct and the upcoming MCC for example. I Think is is mainly due to laziness, incompetence or design choice when they do not reach/aim for 1080p/60fps. Also, we see in games like Ryse, that resolution is only part of what make a game gorgeus since that game is, in my view, the best looking game out there, coming in at 900p/30fps.

developers have to balance the raw stats (1080p and 60fps) with the softer, or at least harder to quantify via marketing, stats (draw distance, number of active things on screen, texture quality, polygons, ect).   i belive every developer wants the best possbile looking product on the market.  sometimes, within the confines of the hardware and game, less resolution will look better.   they aren't being lazy.

and killer instinct isn't 1080.

Yes, why I also wrote that it can be a design choice, which also is the reason not all games on PS4 hit 1080p/60fps. And I know, my mistake about Killer Instinct, but I can easily add Fifa 14, NBA2K14 and Wolfenstin to that llst.

Actually I thought it was confirmed that 32mb are enough for 1080p.

When you're developing multi-plat and there's a big chance that the average consumer won't care about the difference between 900p and 1080p, there's no reason to waste more development time and money.

yeah, sorry about hitting twice about killer instinct.  i use a lot of tabs so when i quoted you your other response wasn't there yet.

Sorry, but Halo 2 is not going to be 1080p, 343 has already confirmed that they are having issues reaching that resolution due to rendering the game twice at the same time to switch between "classic" graphics, and the enhanced version on the fly.

In any case the games that ARE hitting 1080p on Xbox One are less graphically intensive than games running at 1080p on the competition's console.  I find it odd that people are still arguing about this (often with incorrect assumptions about how graphics actually works!).  The cold hard fact is that Microsoft, emboldened by the idea of "taking over the living room", and the success they had with people using the 360 for streaming video, designed a set-top box instead of a game console.  There is nothing "wrong" with their design, but they never intended the main resolution to be 1080p.  From the start, they were going to name the new console the "Xbox 720" to highlight it's 720p resolution!  (Go watch the movie "Real Steel" if you don't believe me)

Now that they are selling a stripped down "Kinectless" version of the Xbox One, and marketing it JUST as a game console...now we can see it's weaknesses come to the fore.  They opted for less raw horsepower, choosing a lower end GPU...and then opted for cheaper memory as well.  Now, you can see that, late in the game, they KNEW that they had an issue with performance...hence the ESRAM cache being added to try and mitigate the issues with slower RAM...and they also increased the clock speed on both the CPU and GPU right before launching (factory overclock).

We can debate whether 30fps or 60fps is preferable in games all day long...or argue about whether a human eye can discern the difference between 782p, 900p or 1080p.   But that really doesn't matter...the PERCEPTION in the market is that the Xbox is less powerful...and that perception is backed up by facts every time a new multiplatform game is released.

So now what Microsoft has to do is convince millions of potential customers that none of this matters, and that the very best games are available only on their console....and here is the BIG problem!  Microsoft just doesn't have enough exclusive games to matter to most people.  Over 90% of all of the games released this generation are going to be multiplatform...and THOSE games play better on the "other" console!  For the rest, the titles that ARE exclusive to Microsoft only appeal to a small segment of gamers...titles like Halo, and Gears of War...good games...but still lacking the diversity of experiences that the competition is bringing to their exclusive lineups.  It also doesn't help that their tentpole franchise, Halo, isn't coming out with a new game this year...just the remaster...and the new "Gears" hasn't even been formally ANNOUNCED yet!  All we have for many of the titles Microsoft is leaning on is pre-rendered CGI from games that are just NOW beginning production!

In short, Microsoft has an uphill battle facing them.  The big question is if they have the ability to pull through the next couple of years...which, make no mistake, are going to be rough...or, will shareholders finally lose patience with the money pit the Xbox division has been SINCE INCEPTION and decide to spin it off or kill it off completely.   Microsoft HAS shown, however, a tenaciousness in their "Devices and Services" division...even when their products fail horribly in the market, they still keep plugging away...Surface, Windows 8, Windows Phone...none of these products have great sales, or much mass market appeal...yet MS keeps making them, even when they lose millions (or billions) of dollars...so the future might not be totally bleak for Xbox loyalists.

One thing is certain, however, it's going to be an interesting show to watch!
