Forums - Sony Discussion - Yoshida: I don't understand people who only want AAA

"I hear complaints [about the lack of AAA games]. I do realise that some people are only interested in big-budget AAA games. I don't really understand those people. I don't know if they've tried some of the indie games and decided they're not interested. Maybe they haven't even tried. That's a key question. With Resogun, which we offered for free for a long time on PS Plus, not every PS Plus member downloaded it, and that's a great, great game. That's a key question for us."

I don't understand them either. BUt what I really found shocking is the bolded part of this statement. Did PS+ memebers not know they could get Resogun for free? Or did they just not bother to download it cause it was an indie game? I find that slightly disturbing and very telling of how twsited things actually are.

And LOL at some in this thread picking on Shu and starting a hate train over nothing.

I didn't download Resogun. I did check it as bought, as I do with every PS+ game, in the off chance that I might one day, in the very distant future, decide to play them.

It's not that I hate indies, I just don't have time to spend on them. I have enough time to play 6-8 AAA games per year, I pick and choose which ones, and that's enough. Playing Resogun, Towerfall or Strider would mean that I have no time for Watch Dogs, Far Cry or FIFA, and I am not ready or willing to make that trade off.

Power to the indies, but not on my console.

What an idiot.  I want steak.  Not a god damned salad(salmon, tuna or some other light meat).  Is that so hard to understand?   Those other meats or salad does not have the same role as steak and it certainly doesn't help if I have an appetite for steak.

Before you go about calling people idiots try and at least be sure that you are not saying something extremely idiotic due primarily to your aparent lack of english comprehension.

He said "I do realise some people are only interested in big-budget AAA games. I don't understand those poeple"

What you are saying would hold true if there were no AAA games on the PS4/XB1 or if he was saying that people should play indies instead of AAA. But thats not what he said. He said he doesn't understand how poeple could ONLY be interested in AAA games. Using your poorly chosen analogy, that would be like saying... there are tons of ice cream flavours out there, I cannot understand how some people only want to eat vanilla ice cream and nothing else. Or better yet, I can not understand how people would only want to play shooters and nothing else.

Take the time to read what is actually being said before you start reaching for you pitch fork.

Im sick of this guy tbh. He seems like the "lovable" guy Sony pulls out when they are getting critizised for something...

Like Phil Harrison or MiyamotoIwata

Its unfortunate that I have to use CEOs rather than other heads.

Miyamoto and Iwata has always been like this. Where was Yoshida 2 years ago? He just suddenly popped up...

Yoshida has been their since the PS1, he got promoted with the release of PS4. Part of the the massive reconstruction that people have been saying Sony has been undergoing. He's basically taken Kaz's spot and Kaz has taken Kutaragi's spot I think.

Really? What did he use to do? Iwata started out as a programmer.

Indies are only successful because there are not enough AAA games.

the success of certain AAA games is because there are not enough AAA games.

indies are sucessful because they are fullfulling gaming needs AAA completely ignore.  there is no such thing as a AAA shump.  there are no AAA puzzle games.  there are no AAA platformers (they get AA at best).

i enjoy playing fps team death match from time to time,..  but i play indie because only playing fps team death match would be so incredibily boring i would quit gaming.   thank god indies exist.

I really like Yoshida. He keeps it real.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who will only play a game if it cost $60 and they know it had a large development team. I think of these people the same way I think of those who only wear clothes that have a popular label attached. There is really nothing you can do about the willfully ignorant.

Guess why no AAA puzzle games exist. Because people are content with their low budget puzzle games. They wouldn't even know the joy of a AAA puzzle game. Of course they don't miss things that they never experieced. Like how medieval people didn't need toilets and were thankful for the holes in the ground they could use.

The notion that AAA games would stay as stale and generic if there was more of them is ridiculous. The reason why AAA games get away with their blandness is because there is next to no competition. More AAA games, more competition, more innovation.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Indies is fine and all but they merely serve as something diversifying in between AAA. Quirky is only good in a certain amount and only if there is still big budget titles to balance it off with. I dont want the industry to become mobile, indie and then a handfull of the same shooters. We need new big ip,s i used to just think it was because of the end of the gen and afterwards innovation could thrive but sadly the big guys still doesnt seem to be willing to take risks.. Hopefully watch dogs will have somewhat proven that new ip can still be selling like the next battlefield or cod.

"Games are only good when they cost millions of dollars."

If you really believe that is what I'm saying I'm pretty shocked.  AAA games aren't even for me anymore as a general rule. I understand people whom are singleminded or narrowminded in their apetites, hobbies and cosumption patterns is what I should have said had I thought this analogy of food and appetite would be misconstrued as such.
