Forums - Politics Discussion - Is raising minimum wage nationwide a horrible idea?

I am sure people that will never live or expect to live on the minimum wage are more likely to think its a bad idea than people for whom it is their present and only realistic future.

Doesn't this just cause inflation proportionally.

Yes, among other things. At the very least, minimum wage supporters should acknowledge that each state has a different economy and a nationwide minimum wage would not work in every state.

I agree. It's minimum for a reason. All it takes is a little ambition to escape it.

I think major corporations like WalMart, McDonalds, etc......... should have to pay a higher minimum wage. Small businesses though shouldn't be forced to pay a minimum wage. Although in general I support a higher minimum wage, you can't expect people to work for 7.25/hour and still be able to live off of that when prices continue to skyrocket for basic needs (food, water, shelter, etc...)

We have to look at why prices continuously rise, hint many "economists" think that inflation is good and necessary for a healthy economy while falling prices are bad.

Yes it does. Problem is, people working in minimum wage feel like they're being underpaid in an economy where vertain commodities are pretty expensive. I somewhat agree with the OP. While a dramatic increase of the minimum wage would do more harm overall than good, those workers shouldn't be exploited either. Also, if a wage increase is necessary, it shouldn't be skyrocketed to $15 out of the blue.

A small percentage in the US actually make minimum wage. Many people support raising it inspite of already making more.

I believe it can kill jobs, I don't believe its going to benefit low skilled people looking for work, most jobs already pay more, so I don't support it.

I never worked a minimum wage job personally. Why? They never hired me so I was forced to search for jobs that paid more.

Isn't it true that the minimum wage hasn't grown proportional to the economys growth during the last 50 years or so? If it had followed the general growth of the economy, the effect wouldn't be visible. This is a way to raise it and then maybe locking it to GDP. In Sweden we don't have minimum wage, but something called collective wage agreements between unions and representatives of the business sector. Every country has different methods I suppose.

Yeah, working for minimum wage sucks but raising it would result in me being replaced with a Self Check-Out station. I'd rather have lower taxes.
