Forums - PC Discussion - Building a Gaming PC for 1080p for Under $550

This video proves that you simply cannot build a PC that matches the PS4 or even the XB1 at their given price point. As many here have been saying for sometime.

I'm pricing a build right now that is just over $800. That is the sweet spot (price/performance) right now.

you can buy the ps4 gpu eqivalent for 200, and if you looked into apus (like a ps4) you would find its equivalent there aswell.

Why wouldnt a pc thats about 500 witht the equivalent gpu of a ps4 last as long as a ps4? Most pc games use the same api as consoles and are being optomised continuously aswell.

have you ever looked into pcs? a crappy surface pro for 700 can run titanfall. you think a dedicated machine wont?

its like you got all this preconception from a forum and never once tried doing anything you talk about once (or even research it, go watch linus tech tips they have a video up showing a 5-6 year old gpu getting equivelent performance as an xbox one). So take it from someone who builds pcs for a living: you're so wrong.

Lol, I get that you're new here, so I won't treat you too harshly. Your facts are woefully wrong about me (I am a Playstation and PC gamer if you didn't know) and PCs that are equivalent to a PS4. And don't get caught up in your feelings over this.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Lol, and i get that youre straight up wrong here. Trust me go watch a few linus tech tip videos. don't let you're wrongness get caught up in this and go do some research. like alot of console gamers say: hardware doesnt change.

PS4 is 400 since last november, and can do 1080p/60fps, so...

There's nothing I can really say to this. I just want to highlight that someone somewhere can actually post something like this in a thread like this.

Nothing wrong with what I said, it's pointless to build a PC 25% more expensive than a PS4 that will be useless in like 2 years and a PS4 will endure at least 5-6 years.
People would better invest a little more into building a PC to game. But nothing wrong with doing this either, I just don't see any good point in it.

My PC becomes pointless in 2 years why? I spent $600 and everything I play looks fine to me. My last PC didn't cost much more and I spent 4 years gaming in 1200P.

Your comment about the price of PS+ would be a lot more relevant if you didn't get 24 games a year with it.

Also console performance actually gets better without doing anything under the hood, games get better looking and run better the longer you have it. In order to achieve the same effect on PC of games looking better and running better you have to upgrade.

A PC is at its best the day you buy it, a console only gets better the longer you have it.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

I feel lot of people are downplaying the performance of a 500-600€ budget build on this thread, either out of bias or lack of experience.

Theres lot of value to be had at 500-600$ range, I've had two 500-550€ budget builds myself in the past 6 years. the performance difference from "max graphics" to "max graphics -2 graphical options (usually shadows to medium-high from ultra and anti-aliasing to none or low AA") is usually the difference between perfectly playable 30FPS to <15FPS. Not to mention if you build smart you can allways extend your current build with a new GPU in a year or two to get upto double the performance for 80€-150€ more.

Getting 60FPS out of a budget build though is not going to happen, but I dont think it happens much even on consoles, even there you have to decide whetever u want mediocre visuals on 60FPS or a really crisp-detailed image at 30FPS.

500-600€ PCs also do not become any more obsolete than console, if you can play Call of Duty 11 on 4 years old PS4 at low-medium graphics 1080p@30FPS, I don't doubt u can do that same thing with a similar PC setup.

Wrong, I use mods to drastically improve the visuals and performance of my games as developers typically do a poor job of optimizing code (includes console developers). I don't have to wait for updates and optimization that may never materialize. Additionally, I commented on PS+ where? It has certainly come a long way as far as competitive pricing goes but I still buy almost everything on Steam because you just can't beat spending $2-5 on last year's blockbusters with no subscription fees attached.

I forgot to mention, in 2-3 years I can simply spend $200 on a new video card that will leave the PS4 in the dust while extending the lifespan of my PC to about 7-8 years. The ability to upgrade a PC is a very good option to have.

You can probably get away with an; Intel Pentium g3258, Z87/Z97 motherboard and 8GB DDR3 RAM - any will do, as long as it dual channel. Add a mid range GPU in there for good measure: something like R7 270, and a good PSU with it. Overclock CPU/GPU and the PC should last a budget gamer for some time.

Made up a build on PCpartpicker in a few minutes with the specs above. Costs just a shade under $570.

Edit: with this build, there is an upgrade path on the CPU side (should you be wanting more processing power), since the motherboard supports Intel's upcoming Broadwell processors.

You get 24 "free" games that you have no choice in getting. I know that I only touch a fifth of the games I get through PS+.

And PC graphics do get better, so I don't know what you mean. My PC from 2 years ago plays games better than ever. If you get a very cheap PC you probably won't get much out of it, but spend $800 and you can have a PC that outperfoms the consoles by far for the next 3-4 years.

That is silly. My 2011 laptop can play any game I want (albeit some at low-medium settings.) So any gaming PC made today should be able to play all the games the PS4 can play in its lifetime. To say the PS4 will play games 5 years from now at the level of fidelity as even low performance gaming PC's is ridiculous. The PS4 will be just as dated, if not more, as a $400 PC, primarily because you can't upgrade it. While a $400 PC, even if it is less capable now - than a PS4, would likely only need a new $150 graphics card (as prices go down) in two years, and it will VASTLY outperform a PS4. So really, it would end up being $400 + $150 (new graphics card) - $100 (free online) + steam deals on games = comparable price to the PS4 and a longer lifespan.

when this pc for $400-$550 plays the last of us remastered, 1080 60fps, then come talk to me.
