Not at all. When did having options become a bad thing?

Okay yes there are quite a few bad indie games, but I have a radical solution to this tricky problem. You guys ready for it? Here it is:

Don't....buy them.

I dont, but that doesnt keep me from hearing about the shit some indie developers talk about the bigger games...

That's what I meant with that comment. If you have a 2 star rating on a game on the app store, chances are even if you don't know anything about video games you won't buy it.

That however still doesn't stop for having a plethora of crappy (and sometimes successful) games available on those platforms. There is alos the thing of popular indie games are already established, just take a look at King (the developers of Candy Crush) to see where I'm going with this. All of their games are successful because they have a marketing push behind them, and they can also pay for ratings in their games, and actual talented indie developers don't even come close to have that luxury, that means their chances of getting their games popular is basically none.

In my opinion, that's on the consumer, not on the developers.  If the consumer isn't willing to put the effort into researching their purchases, they can't really complain about what they get.  And if they're waiting for some advertising campaign to tell them what to buy, well, they deserve to get fleeced then.  It's hard to have sympathy for folks who have more information at their fingertips than at any time in history, but refuse to use it to their advantage.

I don't get whats wrong with some people these days. Why should having more options and variety ever be something bad? I mean if you hear naughty dog/ubisoft say they aren't making uncharted/assassins creed respectively cause they wanna make an indie game instead then yeah, you can get riled up.

As it stands, how about this... rather than have issues with how many of them are coming to market, how about you just don't buy or better yet, look at what you aren't interested in or want. You can stick to all your AAA games or what not.

Sometimes people talk like they are forcing anyone to do anything.

We have some who only want the next Uncharted or the next Halo, CoD, Mario & Final Fantasy. It's AAA or nothing. Anything less then a 30-50M budget isn't worth anybodies time.

Me, I am a big time mobile gamer now, so I know full well you have bad and good in the indie scene. Luckily for me though I know this also holds true in the AAA scene. For each crappy Flappy Bird ripoff that costs me $0 we have a crappy Quantum Theory which costs $60.

I ignore what I know is bad and I go with the ones I think I would like. Choice is good. Also, it seems many here should do some research before buying a product and not just buying based on a commercial and/or because IGN says it's the best thing ever.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Why are you comparing app stores to actual gaming platforms? The market is different.

Anyway i'll easily trade some of the awful AAA multiplats (only one that looks remotely interesting is The Evil Within) coming this fall for indies.

Nope, not at all.

So there's a lot of them and a large amount are crap. That's games in general in a nutshell since I started gaming in ~ 1994.

I'd happily sit through this indie boom for quite a while longer as long as there's gems here and there. And not even gems. There's plenty of stuff out there that I'd say is mechanically; aesthetically or just in general quite a mediocre game that I can have a lot of fun with. Which is just the same way I feel about various Japanese or otherwise boxed releases.

I'd prefer to have the mid-tier of gaming back, but I much prefer indie as a tier to AAA.

Couldn't agree more.

I've been gaming since '89 on a NES. Most of the stuff on it was pure trash, and with far less media covering it, all you could do was judge something by the box art (which rarely reflected the real game back then), pray that it didn't suck and take it home.

Same deal with my Genesis

Same deal with my N64

Same deal with my GameCube, though online reviews were prevalent enough at this point to steer clear of the garbage. Same deal with the PS2.

Same deal with my Wii.

Having to wade through a knee deep-pile of shit to get to the gold has been a part of gaming culture since the first console went public. The only thing that changed is the verbage we use to define them.

Isn't that one of the reasons the console gaming market crashed in the U.S? hundreds of crappy and shovelware everywhere, of course there is basically no chance of that happening again, the internet is now a thing so the chances of people buying bad games is much much lower than in the 90s...although the internet didn't stop flappy bird for becoming a huge success.

In any case, like I mentioned in my previous posts, unless you get lucky or have a marketing push, good indie games will be left in the dust, making talented developers less and less motivated to make games (after all people make games for money), and the quick cash grabbers will have a gold mine in their hands, basically what is happening right now in the mobile market.

You give the internet waaaaay tooo much credit. Actually, let me rephrase, you give some of the poeple that use it way too much credit.

What the interent can do though, si help generate and spread word of mouth, so technically... good games will sell themselves. It may take longer than the marketing heavy AAA games to hit certain sales, but they would sell.

My biggest problem with indies is their art style and direction. Artists unleash their creativity and go for extreme and unique styles to make up for the lack of funds. And while the results are indeed beautiful, it's just not what I want for my gaming needs.

When I'm hungry, more often than not I don't want some molecular gastronomer to cook up an exotic meal with techniques and ingredients I can't pronounce but that are sure to give my taste buds a 4 hour erection guaranteed, I just want a hearty home cooked meal.

I know that was an intentional shot at Fabio, for shame! :)

You gotta also love how so many here loved the Wii, yet it was full of crap games like they bitch about with the app store or Indie scene.

People just like to pretend consoles have been immune to low quality titles being released on them.

Some of the things said here are strange. You wouldn't want a gourmet meal if you had the option? Ok.
