That would be illegal.

People are free to be athiest, why not free to have a religion?

Only on current laws. In the hypothetical scenario this thread propose the laws would change and it wouldn't be illegal anymore.

Laws that protect freedom of belief. I personally believe, and is more or less scientifically and legally understood to that Athiesm is a belief just like every other religion so a law forcing you to be atheist would be no different then a law forcing you to be Christian. Unless the first amendment evaporates, it won't happen.

In response to OP, Atheism causes conflict too, Agnoticism is the only true neutral, and tolerance is the only way differing opinions can be reconciled. A law that bans religion will cause even more problems.

No. The US will cease to exist long before religion becomes illegal sadly. I think some european territories will be the first to outlaw religion but even that is still hundres of years away. One thing is for sure though. Afterwards religion will be known as the single greatest brainwash in human history. Will even take over hitlers nazi empire because of the length in which it was so dominant.

Current laws? It's in the damn consititution. Freedom of belief is a basic human right guranteed by nearly every civilized nation.

If that's changed to hunt down religious people, it's not a matter about them anymore. We'd be living literally in George Orwell's 1984 and the situation would be bad for everybody.

So would banning smoking but by setting up limitations you can slowly and effectively change a lot of peoples ideals.  Once there is an insignificant amount of people left you can impose a ban without people complaining. Right now people who doesnt smoke are taught to hate it. Same will happen with religion as science becomes more and more widespread throughout the world. At some point in time far far off,  i think every religion will be considered a freakish cult like scientology is being seen now. Now people will always have faith but if we can learn them to channel that faith into humans instead of a man in the clouds or space or wherever we can truly progress as a species.

As an Agnostic Atheist I say no, nor would I want to force people out of their beliefs. Separation of Church and State is to protect the freedom of religion, despite what "persecuted" Christians want to believe.

You mean brainwash them. Then impose the tyranny of the majority upon the minority.

Let me clear up some misconceptions that you seem to have:

Religion does not oppose Science, the Church was executing their political power through control of religion.

Science can only flourish in a system where there is freedom of belief.

Religion does not affect whether or not we progress as a species.

If you actually bothered to get informed you would know that in America currently the concern over the Economic Crisis is what has resulted in the downsize of Nasa and the closure of the space program, not Religion, if you want to know whats really stopping progress, why don't you ask why the military gets so much funds while Nasa is languisihing.

20 years? Maybe 50 if USA is under fascist dictatorship by then.If the USA even exists then, it may have broken up into smaller regions by that point.

I disagree. Some 'athiest' people are fanatics just like religious fanatics. But for true athiests it is just a lack of belief not a belief itself.

It doesn't matter to Science, it cannot be proven or disproven so its belief by defintion. However, religion encorporates faith while Atheism technically does not so its not Religion in truth.

That's not really true. Religion itself doesn't have much if any negative impact, the extremists however do. This is evident many times throughout history and is still evident today. It is mostly religious people that oppose things like gay marriage is it not?

Extremists are neither representative nor exclusive to theism. It is a claim of ignorance and generalization to say that mostly religious people oppose gay marraige, because the term religious includes every single belief system on the planet had by a human being.

Blaming the entire religion of a people for the actions of the extremist is the same mentality that leads to genocides.

You blame the extermist's religion because its easy not because its right.

You can't generalize entire peoples because they share a couple of tenets in their belief system, making religion illegal even in organized form is persecution. Freedom of Assembly is also protected in the constitution.
