Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could someone explain it to me ? (Ps2 sales)

People,

According to vgchartz, PS2 sold approx 140 millions units. If I look at PS2 most iconic games, a lot of them sold 3 to 6 millions. But the market was 140 millions owners.

So, can we consider "flop" god of war 1, DMC 1, and other games that sell alike ?

PS2 was a dvd player and golden land for piracy, and 3mil sold is not a flop, in any system, unless you are Square Enix

No because gaming budgets weren't 100 million each game in the PS2 era.

Do some research...

People need to learn that software sales don't scale linear against hardware sales.

Such issues are to be expected since Sony also pushes a format with their consoles.

The PS2 had such a great library of games that any game releasing for the system had harsh competetion. That's my explanation anyways.

Yes, you certainly can if you are a ridiculous person.

what?

Anyways, as most have said already then all a game had to do to make a profit was sell 1M copies. And piracy was a pretty big deal on the PS2. There rae people that probably got rich off PS2 piracy.

The best selling Wii games were bundled minus galaxy and smash bros with GT and GTA outselling them.Only the same games sell extremely well with the PS2 games averaging 4plus million.Every type of game sold. Not shovelware or shooters.

Back in the ye old days of the 6th gen, it was often enough to sell 500k on 3 platforms, and the devs managed to franchise it. Mikami stated (I think it was him) that a max GC budget would have been at 4 million. Most games where made between 1-3 million $ as far as I know. Yupp, you could have broke even with 200k sales in the first year, with an exclusive. Anything about 1 million was certainly to get a sequel
