Recently Hewlett-Packard (HP) unveiled ''The Machine'', a new computer technology capable of calculating 640 Tera-Bytes (TBs) of Data in a billionth part of second. HP claims about the new Photonic Device that it will give 6 times more power in computers and by using 80 times less resources. The new device will run on the HP's own Operating System named as The Machine OS which will be an open source operating system optimized for huge data to be transferred.
HP says that ''The Machine'' is designed on the concept of memristors or resistors which are capable of storing information in a permanent state even if powered off. Memristors are capable of working as fast as RAM and also capable of storing data permanently like Hard Disk Drives or SSDs. It means if it is in a gaming PC then the PC will instantly boot up while the loading screens will be finished due to extremely fast transfer rates.
Rather than using traditional copper wires, ''The Machine'' will use silicon photonics to improve the data transfer speed and decrease the demand of energy. The silicon photonics will also be more thinner which means more data can be packed into smaller system. The device is in the starting phase of development and HP claims that it is not a server, workstation, PC, Phone device but it is answer to all of these. ''The Machine'' has still a long time to come as the HP want to create the samples till next year and then launch ''The Machine'' on 2018 in consumer market after full development.
The device will surely take it's place as servers, workstation or even as supercomputers maybe but do you think that it will be affordable for normal consumers after some years of it's release or it will take a long time to come in reach of a common man ? What do you think this technology will bring in the world of computing ? Do you think this technology will be available for use in gaming ? Tell your thoughts in comments below.
