5th & 6th generation.

Snes. That's all that needs to be said.

The 4th gen.
Gaming at its pinnacle; no micro-transactions or any of that BS, tons of new and exciting ideas, 2D refined to near perfection, and games that hold up better today than any other gen prior to last.

A few decades down the road it will be the 7th gen. I don't think we'll ever see those kinds of sales again.

HW - System (SW)

155 - DS (816)
101 - Wii (920)
83 - PS3 (830)
83 - 360 (893)
81 - PSP (962)

4,421,000,000 (software)
503,000,000 (hardware)

And the numbers are still climbing.

Golden age isn't about sales. It's about how good the generation was from a gamers POV - 7th is probably the worst generation since the 3rd gen.

The 7th gen will be gaming at its most prosperous point. It's when everyone was a gamer; I think that constitutes a golden age.

This man gets it!

4th and 5th, both close runner-ups.

You also seem to get it, Xen!

Well, revenue wise it was during the 2nd gen. And that revenue wasn't from homeconsoles! It was from arcades. We aren't near to have such a large revenue in gaming now (if you adjust for inflation) as we had then.

It's all about the 4th and 5th Gens. That's when gaming reached a peak in quality that's not going to be matched. Sure, there's been classics outside those two generations every once in a while, but not nearly as consistently as during the 4th and the 5th. The 2nd Gen should get an honorable mention, because that's like the Age of Discovery for games and the golden age of the Arcades.

For me personally, it's the 5th Gen, without a doubt.

I'm sure 8th gen will have the best games ever made. People voting for old ass gens are delusional. Don't tell me you'd rather pick a SNES over a PS3 for example, if you could only choose one.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

Yes, I would.
