Screw this, its a name a few find "offensive" due to political correctness run a muck. I am a redskins fan now! Just bought a Redskins hat and jersey off amazon.

So you became a fan of a team because they were politically incorrect. You do understand that there is such thing as a balance. You could be neutral or not care too. Will you buy my new teams shirt, the Milwaukee Cracker Honky tonk hill billies or maybe the Chicago American Fatso's.

In reality though, I wish people would lighten up. I'm Irish and Americans ramble on about leprechauns and nonsense and I find it funny. Look at the Celtics and the fighting Irish. Heck, look at P.S I love you. Silly stereotypes and nothing like or got to do with Ireland in reality, but yeah, maybe people just need to lighten up. But in my book, that means that everyone should be treated equally including jews, black people and mexicans. That is just never going to happen though.

Im saying that a small minority should not have a majority influence. And I am not alone, many others see this as bullshit.

http://espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=frontpage&pollId=4373137

As i insert this with over 45K votes, 62% say they should NOT change their name.

Well, the F word for Gay people is just a word to a small minority, people calling Irish people Paddys is offensive but I wouldn't stand for it. I moved to the US while everyone laughed at me at home for doing so as they think people here live terribly, they say the crime rate is horrible and people are horribly unhealthy. I told them not to generalize and I was moving nonetheless.

My wife is from the US and I thought it was the honorable thing to do.  I came here and was treated like dirt for being an immigrant. I find it offensive. Do you think that is bullshit? Most people think it's bullshit and think people should be allowed mock me and tell my kids to carry a passport. Is that ok because the majority think it's funny? It's funny how the majority are the ones who think it's ok, because they have never been the underdog, so how would they get it? I was that majority at home and here I am now, with a better understanding of how it feels.

I would never treat anyone like that. Your compairing apples to oranges. I would never mock you or your children, your taking this waaay too personal. Its a football team, not a klan meeting. This is more about the government telling a private business what to do and how to do it because of a small group of people.

We all have been descriminated on before, you move on and keep going.

This is taking a game and making it political for no other reason than to split the country on yet another issue. Im done being told what to do, what to say, etc. they are words. I would support a honky team, i would have a ton of fun with it. lol

You are ridiculous and over sensitive. Jews is associated with Hollocaust so lets not say that anymore. Gay is associated with AIDs epidemic so lets not say that anymore. Rwanda is associated with Genocide so lets not say that anymore along with Serbs.

Also, ******. No one is going to get offended by you saying nigger or redskin. Its a damn word and we have had threads talking about nigger here before. The only time it becomes an issue is when it is used in this way, "you are a *****." So to use astriks for ******* when you are talking about the name ******* makes you seem self rightgeous and pompus

"It's just a word."

Tell it to this guy please:

That's probably the word he heard as he was getting whipped. But remember it's "just a word."

Red***** is offensive and should be banned. It's not about being politically correct, but about doing the right thing. Words DEHUMANIZE people, which makes it OK to discriminate against them. That "just a word" was used to make blacks seem "less than human," which means it's OK to enslave them. After all, they aren't human - well, in the antebellum era they were what, 1/3rd of a human right?

Just like with Native AMericans. Words like "Red****" and "Savage" are meant to dehumanize them. So it's OK that they went from 40 million people to only a few million. After all, they' aren't human right?

Resorting to logical fallacies. Tisk tisk

LiquorandGunFun, Dude, but to them it's more than that. And being honest, I am completely calm, so no worries. I am just looking at both sides here. Maybe to some natives this IS a big deal, just like the way I have been treated. Do I bitch and whine about it? No. But then again, I'm Irish and that's how we are, so I dunno. We joke about the drunken jokes and laugh about the "potatoe famine" aka mass genocide.

On one side there is you who is fighting for a word. On the other there is people who feel as I do about the above, or how you do about something else. and FYI the fighting Irish was a wife beater stereotype created by an anti Irish movement that went on from the destruction of our state in 1066 to this day. A once great civilization ripped to pieces by the British empire with the world at it's back, then who we are has been joked about since. We have temples older than the pyramids of Egypt and what do people look at? Our F'in Leprechauns that were invented to stereotype and ridicule us. It's a stereotype that is sprawled all over hollywood and do I laugh about it? Yes, I do. Is it annoying, holy crap yes. Ireland is portrayed wrongly in every movie, everywhere in every way and I laugh about it a lot. But it's not my place to choose for native americans.

And yes, I understand your point quite well. In Ireland, I had eastern European friends who are embarrassed by the other easterners coming in for cheap labor and refusing to speak English. Instead they try to force our government to teach Polish/ Slovak/ Russian in our schools. Only some!! And Pffft. Madness, but it really makes racist sports mascots look pety.

Standing Horse, a friend and former room mate of mine is a Cree, a tribe largely in Montana, and I asked him about the whole nick name thing. So, this is one man's view. To him naming teams after tribes "Seminole or Sioux" etc. was fine as long as depictions were respectful and indicative of those cultures. "Indians" is grey area as generic and bit erroneous terms for the various tribes that use either "American Indian" or "First Americans" as general term. For him "Redskin" is the equivalent of calling someone a "Kike", or "Faggot" or "Nigger". It is a derogatory term that he would never use to describe himself or his fellow Cree or other tribes. So, while it may not be offensive to me, I respect him and his culture and history enough to never refer to him or his people by the term.

so stupid. I am white. If the was a team called the White Skins or the Caucasion Cruisers I would not care in fact the same people would be suing to change the name because it shows favoritism to white people. but since its a red skin it is clearly disparaging- basically they are telling Native americans to be ashamed of the look because portraying that look is disparaging.

You consider youself White, they do not consider themselves "Red Skin". It akin to if someone decided to name a team N***er and say its in honor of black people.

A lot of you guys that are in favor of the Redskins name are blowing this ruling completely out of proportion. They're not banning anything, they're simply stating that they will not honor any trademark claims to the name. Are any of you even capable of understanding that?

Also, just because you're not offended by the name, or have some "friend" who happens to be Native American who isn't offended by it, doesn't mean that it isn't a derogatory term. How about you put on a Redskins hat with the logo and name on it and go to a Native American reservation. Once you're there, I would love it if you would go up to each and every Native American you see and tell them, "Hey, this is not offensive to your race." Or how about you greet every Native American with, "Good morning Red Skin."

I am the Playstation Avenger.

As much I oppose racism, it's another thing to persecute/prosecute people over a stupid word. The way we've been attacking racist terminology (for the most part) has been ineffective.

Was it really justifiable to ruin Paula Deens career over a stupid racist remark she said 30yrs ago? (correct me if I'm wrong)

Why do people feel they need to single out Justin Bieber because he used the word "nigga" when a lot of other artists use it?

Same thing with the Redskins. If you wanna go a little bit further how come no one is crying about Disney's "what makes the red man red?" scene in Peter Pan.

The way you attack this is by educating not prosecuting. Plus honestly I don't see why it disparages the natives when we call people of African descent "black" or others like Indian, Mexican, etc "brown people."

The thing is is that racism leads to atrocities. What's so bad about what Paula Deen said? Well the word she said has been associated with slavery, abuse, kidnapping, segregation, murder, family separation, genocide, etc. etc.

"Red*****" (I won't say it anymore) is associated with genocide, invasion, disease, segregation, humilation, tears, murder, etc. etc.

Honestly these are more than just words. They lead to much more. Remember Hitler would refer to Jews as "parasites" and "rats."

Sorry you are ridiculous. You can not determine what others do or do not find offensive, especially if you have not been through what they have been through. As far as I'm away Gay is not widely considered an homophobic remark, hence many gay people refer to themselves as gay. Only the demographic in question can determine what is offensive to them, so unless you are a Native American try and use some perspective and imagine what it might cause offense.
