It is not Nintendo's fault that Gamespy, the company running the Nintendo online services, ceased operation.

From what I understand, they could have continued paying Gamespy to run the servers, but chose not to. This isn't a slam against Nintendo by the way: the servers were up and running for about a decade, and the last new game that used those servers was released, what, three or four years ago? But this statement isn't completely accurate.

You must have been away from the internet for the past 2 months.
This was big news

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

A bit off topic but McDonald's needs to bring back the Arch Deluxe burger!! Why do they discontinue things that I love? I miss the Alpine White Nestle chocolate bar, too. :(

We still think it's unfair.

A price cut this year is mandatory, it's already been long enough on the market. If Nintendo ever hopes to sell more consoles, they need to throw us a bone.

I don't like online content in the e-store without any account system. Games attached to the console? Bullshit! No way I'm ever buying anything in it. Moreover I seriously doubt this special ofer works in my country. Nintendo blocks Internet in general in its consoles in Poland, I have to work aroung their blockade to use it :(

$200 for new or used? 32 GB?

Yes , is fair. Also, you can buy a Wii U with Mario Kart 8 and get another game for free.

It's affecting a lot of PC games too. Star Wars Battlefront, Neverwinter Nights, a bunch of EA titles for an example. There's even a couple of PS3 titles closing servers because of it if I remember correctly. Luckily for PC though, patching is something they can do to fix the problem. The Wii can't patch so Nintendo has no choice but to close off Gamespy orientated servers.

I heard rumours about companies being able to subscribe again last year if they really wanted to, but apparently the cost for maintaining the servers jumped ridiculously high that no company in their right mind would want to, so the servers are closing. But that's all hearsay.

NNID: TanukiTrooper - PSN: MatrosRx - STEAM: TanukiTrooper

Like people said gamespy hosted the online for all wii and ds games and some on the other systems to. The servers were shut down last month. Nintendo network is not made for wii and ds games so they can not be made online through that.

So if you want to play online with Mario kart get a wii u or 3ds.

That's what I heard too. It's possible to continue the service, it just wasn't practical at all to do so.

The company that ran Nintendo's servers last gen (Game Spy) was pretty much shut down. It wasn't Nintendo's decision. They did not intentionally turn off the servers to force people to buy their new console.

OK guys, this is f*cking serious. So I wanted to play some Mario Kart today (ok, was forced to by a certain woman ;) ). I agreed, started up the Wii, went into multiplayer aaaaaaandd... BOOM! The Wi-Fi service is no longer supported!! WHAT THE F!!!!!! The game sold 35 mil copies, was bundled not so long ago and they already kill the multiplayer?? Why, how, when?? This is the only game I still used my Wii for and we both here feel like this is a blunt "in your face" way of Nintendo forcing us to buy Wii U and MK8. Disgusting. Do you feel like that as well? How can they just kill games like that? What about online trophi... Ups... :P

Damn :( Now I really have to buy that bloody Wii U sooner than I hoped for :( But still I'm not gonna give in before a price cut!! I won't let Nintendo terrorise me like that!!

Was not Nintendo. Gamespy shutdown as did the servers to Wifi Network and all games on it and EA and other companies affected.

Just get Mario kart 8
