N64 and to a lesser extent the PS2, were both snappy machines. This was because they didn't do much extra for you outside of playing your games and with good load times. The PS3 has a lot more data to load with a not so awesome BR Drive, and in-game ui access is usually horrendous when playing most games. 6th gen -> 7th gen actually had gamers waiting significantly longer to play their games. Not just because of loading but also things like updates. I stopped going to the PS Store on PS3 after they changed it because now even that has a load screen and a sluggish interface. PS4 just handles this stuff all in the background now. This time around, SONY's just better prepared the system for what modern day gamers expect. Even firmware updates only require about 10-15secs of my time on the PS4.
