I somehow never even thought of what the delay for the 3DS version of Smash Bros. might mean for the Wii U version. It was only at the Smash Fest while waiting in line that a guy I was chatting with brought this to my attention. It was just 2 months ago that the original launch windows were given, and yet still they got it wrong and had to delay the 3DS version. It's a bit hard to believe that the should be more difficult to create version will arrive on schedule while the easier one to make had to be pushed back significantly. Also, with the original release windows, there would of been atleast 3 months between each versions release. If that still remains the case, it would mean the Wii U version wouldn't launch until January at the earliest. Lastly, it has to be noted that the 3DS was given an exact date while the Wii U version was not, and even though Brawl actually was given a date at the E3 before it's planned holiday release, that didn't stop it from being delayed. So yeah, I'm fully expecting SSB4 Wii U to be a 2015 title at this point. It'd be great if I'm wrong of course, but I have to expect the worse so I wont be as disappointed when it comes true!

The delay is to include Palutena. She's going to be OP as fuck. But the 3DS game would be delayed to 2016 if they tried to balance her.

Nope. Technically the window moved UP from "winter" to "holiday". If they were going to delay it why not announce it at the same time as the 3DS version?

You're assuming that the delay was a developmental delay. They may have delayed it because it would sell better closer to the holiday period. Or because they needed to make sure the online infrastructure was ready (and once it's ready for the 3DS version, it'll be ready for the Wii U version, too).

I always counted both games to be delayed somehow some way.  I mean, Brawl was delayed twice.

Like someone else pointed out, the release window went from ''winter 2014'' a few months ago to ''holiday 2014'' so they are more precise so I doubt it.

Also, Smash is WiiU's only big game for the holiday as far as I know. Hyrule Warrior is september, and Bayonetta is october so those will help WiiU build momentum but they still need a big game for black friday/christmas sale so I doubt they can afford to delay it.

They are two reasons that comes to mind explaining the delay. The balancing is taking more time than they thought, and I think I've read a interview where Sakurai mentioned this problem, and I assume since both games have the same roster with the same moves, when the balancing be done for 3DS it will also be done for WiiU so one huge part of the work will be done for the WiiU as soon as the 3DS version goes gold. The second reason is maybe they rethought about the idea of launching the 3DS game months before the WiiU's, like many ppl pointed out, maybe it was'nt the best strategy for many marketing reasons so they made the games only 1month apart.
