Do you have to pay a sub to use destiny?

Bungee and Activision have both said numerous times there will be no subscription fee.  That could change of course, but op is talking out their ass in that regard.

the game needs to sell 8+ million copies at $60 in order to pay the bills(production + marketing).

Is that possible for a new IP?

The beta is on July 17th for PS4. Damn, you cannot even get that right. I disagree strongly.

so it's officially still the "alpha" that will be accessible this thursday on PS4

to be honest it's a marketing stunt as by definition the alpha build is never released to the public

i'll keep the wording to "beta" in the OP

alpha and beta are just marketing terms anyway these days, so you may as well use the correct word to stop confusion instead of pretending you know better.

You're expecting less than Watch Dogs sold in a week by Christmas?

Hmm.  All the buzz, especially from BenV, is suggesting this is going to be miles bigger than Watch Dogs..

And WD was a great example of showing how people on the internet analyse a game and say it looks bad and then it goes to smash sales expectations.  Real world =/= the internet.

So personally, I don't think Destiny will sell as badly as you're predicting.  Not by a long way.

watchdog is on 5 platforms (6 in the future)

probably 500k + sales on pc

but ur right. this game wont sell less than wd and not below 5 mio

It actually needs to sell over 16M, because not all the money goes to Activision (they get about $30 depending on their negotiation skills).

It will probably not sell that much, but Activision is investing in a franchise, with each future sequel costing just a fraction of the starting $500M.

Also, it's not like they will sell the game and then stop. You have to factor in DLCs, skin packs, weapon shortcuts, merchandising (toys, shirts, mugs, condoms...). After you add in all that revenue, it is highly probable to collect $500M in two years, and then start raking in serious cash with each pending sequel.

My prediction is that the beta will leave people disappointed, upfront sales will remain good (2 million across all platforms' first week combined), Xmas sales will be average at best (3.5 million by the end of 2014) and the legs will be the ones suffering the most (4.5-5.5 million by the end of 2015)

I'll eventually update my prediction end of June, when the impressions of the beta will not be as conditionned as now

I expect the reviews to be similar to Watch Dogs but the hype seems to be dying much faster for Destiny

Also Watch Dogs came out when current gens users are "hungry" and the menu list is short, Destiny is coming out when the menu list is almost saturated.

Oh yeah a totally forgot about publisher's and console's royalties.

Well a new ip selling that well....i can't see it... but maybe long term with dlc/microtransactions like you said..

It's a bit more hyped than Watch Dogs and it probably will have a bit more aggressive marketing. I'm pretty sure MS will want to have something of that cake and advertise it heavily as well.
I'm going save and say 5+ but pretty close to 10.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

The previews I've seen have all been extremely positive from ign to cvg to random alpha testers I've seen on YouTube... What previews are you basing this on?

No, it will be huge. I'm gonna say 10+ million.
