Forums - Sony Discussion - For $140, is it worth getting a PS TV instead of a Vita?

Ever since E3 2011, I have been interested in the Vita. Now, I have bashed it at every oppurtunity, but even I admit it has had some games worth checking out. I did, after all, skip out on the GameCube for the PS2, so I have some fondness of PlayStation products. However, I have frequently doubted the future of the device, doubting that Sony or Western developers would give it much support.

With the news of Vita TV, now renamed PlayStation TV, getting a Western release later this year, I am once again considering the Vita, as a microconsole rather than a handheld. For $140, 30% off of the Vita's price, I can get the bundle with a controller and a free game. At a glance, that seems like a good deal, especially compared to the big consoles' prices.

I'd like to ask a few questions to Vita and Vita TV owners out there. If you could answer even a couple of these questions, I'd appreciate it.

  • The PS TV lacks a back-touchpad like the Vita does. How many games does this make the PS TV incompatible with? Which of those games would be considered essential Vita titles?
  • Conversely, which Vita games DO NOT make good use of the touch-pad? Which do you think would play well on my HD TV?
  • One of the benefits of owning a modern console is the non-gaming functionality, for things like Netflix. How does the Vita stand in terms of providing good non-gaming enertainment options? Netflix, for example, would be a major bonus.
  • What are the digital offerings for the Vita like? I know that there are many acclaimed indie games for the platform, but what about PS1 and PSP games? Are there decent libraries of these games?
  • Will the PS TV come with a sufficently large memory card? If not, what size would you recommend, and how much would that cost?

Also, I am considering the value of the following games for the Vita. Which of them would you recommend/not recommend and why? Also, which ones would be unplayable on PS TV? Feel free to give your own recommendations!

  • Final Fantasy X HD
  • Gravity Rush
  • Guacamelee
  • Muramasa Rebirth
  • Persona 4 Golden
  • Ys: Memories of Celceta

Thanks in advance!

Salnax

I'll sell you my 3G model with uncharted, sly cooper, and I have another but can't think of it's name, and an 8GB mem card for $100. Going to post it on craigslist soon.

Can anyone give me a quick run down of how PS Tv works ? I currently have a vita will that do anythign for me ?

No. It has the same specs and OS than the regular Vita, but it is a mini console to be used with your TV and a Dualshock 3 controller. It will only run Vita games that don't use touch input (except games patched for it like Killzone and Soul Sacrifice), with support to both physical cartridges and digital copies. It will support PS1 and PSP games like the regular Vita and the same PS4 remote play capabilities.

Unless you want a Netflix box or a way to use your PS4 in other rooms it won't do anything your Vita does not.

Ty, very informative.

So at this point, I should probably wait until the Vita gets a price cut I guess?

or wait till both get price cut.  Vita TV should be about 100-120 at most due to the lack of some features.  140 bundle doesn't sound that bad but if you don't think it is worth it then wait for just the Vita price cut.  I think Sony should have just had the controller and Vita TV for 99.  So instead of people looking at Roku, Amazon, or any other streaming player they would perhaps pick up Vita TV instead (since it can stream Netflix, Hulu, etc and also has way better games than Amazon or Roku) for the same price as the other higher end models offered by other companies.

edit - Standalone is only 99 but I believe they should of had it with controller at least too.

Thank you.

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

I would just go for the vita, the point of the vita is that you can play this great ''console quality'' (stupid ''name'') games on the go, so i don't see how taking away the portability* (is that a word?) makes it better... if you want a PSTV mainly for the price just save for some time and get the PS4 instead. I think there's really no point in owning the pstv if you already have another ps device

Yes. If you only want it for PS4 playability and Playstation. Now service, then its definitely the better buy.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I recently bought a Vita slim and so far I am having a blast with it between playing BL2, Gravity Rush, Pixel Junk shooter, Uncharted and remote play I have been using it more than my actual PS4 (frees up the TV for the wife and kids and allows me to watch First Take while playing some Child of Light.

I owned a PSP and a PS3 and remote play absolutely sucked. It now works extremely well and if you enjoy some handheld gaming along with your handheld device I would suggest getting an actual Vita instead of a PSTV if it is a one or the other proposition.

one of the reasons Playstation TV was not released until now was in fact because of the lack of DS4 support, that has now been fixed, there was a recent release update to the PSVita TV that now supports DS4 use on the PSVita TV, now the Playstation TV will also support the DS4 so any game that requires mainly the front screen touch support to play the game can be now compatable due to the DS4 support on the playstation TV. it should be ready intime for the north american launch if its not already is. so pretty much all of the PSVita's games except maybe Tearaway and a few others due to back touch support not being there, but majority will work now thanks to DS4 game pad support for the playstation TV.

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

Holy... then I guess the device is pointless.
