There are at least 7 people working on this game for more than a half year.
$140,000 for six month and seven developers makes (if everyone gets an equal share) $3,333.

You also have to minus the costs Kickstarter is getting from it as well which I'm not sure but I think is 10%. That's still $3000 and it's not $3000 per person, that's $3000 per month. It means they're making ~$18.75 an hour.
That's before even knowing how good the game is. You have no clue how good this game is going to be. It looks nice, but it could have an incredibly small world, the game could play like ass, it could be bugged all to hell. No idea. I'm not saying this game will be bad, but you're giving donations on an expectation that the game will be of any sort of quality.
However that whole $3000 a month doesn't account for the money they'll make after the game gets added to Steam. Let's say it gets added to Steam for $20 and in its lifetime sells 100,000. That's an additional $2,000,000. Minus 33% takenby Steam and divided by seven it's $190,000 profit per person.
Rather than getting a loan and taking a risk, still having to pay the remaining amount back, they go to Kickstarter beg for money which they have no obligation to pay back and can make quite a bit of money for their product. Look at the developers of Oculus Rift. After being funded for the development on Kickstarter, they sold the company to Facebook for one billion dollars. Congrats, you just made several people millionaires without having to take a risk of their own.

I can not find exact answers to your questions. A little more info on how kickstarter works and their success could maybe be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-stats
What you do with your $20 is of no concern for me - you can keep it or buy something.
If the developers can get extra sales after the the kickstarter project ends - good for them.
It takes quite a lot of work to get togheter a presentation that can convice some thousand people to buy your promises. It is also is a problem for the reputation of a developer. Internet never forget a misstake.
I have many of the same thoughts about kickstarter as you but I gather I can part with $20 for a good cause.
