OG Playstation is my number 1, then the PS2.

For me it was either the PS2 or the SNES!

Both are great consoles!

Same here. I go back and forth between these two so often, it's hard to make up my mind.

PS2 has an amazing library, filled with some great exclusives and also a ton of great multiplatform games. Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter, the Ratchet & Clank trilogy, Killzone, Red Faction, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, Grand Theft Auto, God of War -- the list goes on and on. It even hosted some of the best games available on the competition's consoles, e.g., Psychonauts and Resident Evil 4, even if those games performed and played better on Xbox and GCN, respectively.

I've seen gaming forum posters say some dumb things when it comes to the word mature, but this is the first time I've seen someone classify CD audio  and DVD playback as mature content.

Hahahahaha..... I know how it must have sounded to you... thats why I started off with "as funny as it may sound". But there is sound logic to it.

CD audio, was just coming into its own around when the PSX released. The poeple that go out and buy music CDs aren't the 6-13yr olds that nintendo typically caters to. Nope, its the 16-23yr olds. At the time, the PSX was one of the cheapest ways to get a CD player. Hell, at that time a Discman cost almost as much as a PSX. Then with the PS2, it was not only the cheapest DVD player, it was also introduced at a time when DVDs were trying to find its feet. This is why the PS brand is usually refferred to as the trojan horse of the tech industry. Anything you put in a PS, becomes an industry standard. They did it again with blu-ray.

So you see, Cd and DVD playback actually held a looot of sway to why some ppl chose one system over the other. I for one know that the first time i watched the matrix dvd it was on a PS2. Lets not forget, N64, no discs, GC smaller discs so no movie playback. Nintendo not supporting those formats would have been the equivalent today to nintendo not only making a console with an SD card slot instead of a disc drive but also not supporting HD or internet access. Now who do you think cares about stuff like that? 7yr olds? I strongly doubt it.

Its all about reading in between the lines my friend. (not so dumb when you give something a little extra thought huh?)

EDIT: I just checked your profile cause I had a fleeting suspicion. I don't think you were actually born around the time the PSX happened, at the time i think I was just about to hit my teens. My older brother got the PSX, I was pissed cause i was waiting for nintendos next console. So you were definitely still pretty young around the time of the PS2 too. You shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about bro.

I prefer the original Playstation's games a little more.

After GC, my favourite console is a PS2

PS2 is the King!

Within context to the quality of their games during their own life i'd say the PS1 was the best. That's not to say the PS2 wasn't amazing, the advantage of utterly crushing your competition is you get an awful lot of support :p

1. NES - Restored gaming after video game crash.
2. Playstation 1 - Bought mature and hardcore games in gaming who were fed up playing kid's games.

Hur? What kind of new mature content did the PS bring that the other 4th and 5th gen consoles didn't have?

Just off the top of my head, Wipeout, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, FF7 and of course Metal Gear Solid. You may not want to hear it.. but The PSX really did make a more mature audience get into console gaming... or should I say, continue playing console games.

And to OP, It was the most successgul console ever released. Not the "best console ever released". Hell, in the PS2 generation the XBOX was the "best" console of that generation.

All fantastic games. No argument there. It's almost criminal how little time I've spent with PS1 games, but what I've played, I've loved. Sega and Nintendo had mature content like that too, though.

Off topic, but have you read the Parasite Eve book? Super weird. I loved it! Remember in the game when Meada talks about his facination with a similar smaller scale incident that took place in Japan? That's what he's referencing.

That was an awesome book, I totally ate up everything about Parasite Eve, loved that game to bits. I guess Vagrant story was a spiritual successor of Parasite Eve. Oh I forgot to add FFtactics in my list :). Another classic right there.

Well sega had always kinda had mature content, eg. there version of MK had blood and nintendos version had sweat? Mind you, this was bigger than a game running at 720p instead of 1080p back then haha...(the more things change the more they stay the same). The only "mature" games nintendo had back then were Turok and Goldeneye. Basically Rare studios. Nintendo themselves do not make mature content. Oh how could I forget, as funny as it may sound, the biggest mature content that the PSX and PS2 brought to the table were CD audio support and DVD playback support respectively. Imagine that.

Only the 1st Mortal Kombat on SNES had sweat. The 2nd and 3rd ones had the blood again. The SNES also had games like Metroid and Doom. The N64 had stuff like Resident Evil, Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat, and Quake. The Saturn had a good amount of Japanese horror games like D and Alone in the Dark.

Annnd Sega and NEC had CD quality audio and CD play back before the Playstation came out.

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

For me is the second place.

All hail to SNES
