Forums - Sales Discussion - Published titles ratio over platform SW sales

These numbers mean that

Nintendo is not friendly ... 4 14.81%

Nintendo doesn't need 3r... 12 44.44%

Without Wii-like sales Ni... 4 14.81%

Sony and MS have it right 7 25.93%

Total:27

That's why most 3rd Party doesn't work on Nintendo consoles, look at the ratios.

Interesting. I think that shows that unless Nintendo can pull off a Wii they do need some 3rd parties. Wii U isn't do so well at the moment and also has the highest proportion of 3rd party sales of any Nintendo console, that surely shows 3rd parties are needed for more success.

The Vita is also very interesting. People are always complaining about lack of 1st party support on the Vita yet it is the Sony console with the highest proportion of 1st party sales.

I think that mainly has to do with limited third party support, rather than good first party support.

For the Vita? Well it hasn't gotten much western support but there has been quite a few Japanese 3rd party games on the system, similar to the PSP really.

True, but I'd still say the disparity in quantity of third party games between the Vita and other PS consoles is bigger than the disparity in terms of first party.

You have it backwards. The ratios are the result of third parties not working on Nintendo consoles.

Although you are correct in that third parties will look at it the way you did, hence why Nintendo is trapped in an unfavorable and perpetual cycle. Every new Nintendo console will see halfassed attempts of third parties due to sales on previous consoles which instantly leads to low sales that are in turn used to justify scaling support further. That's why Nintendo appealing to third parties with their console design is a lost cause, because whatever Nintendo will do, third parties won't change their stance that their initial efforts have to be test games due to previous Nintendo consoles; that is, if third parties decide to show up at all.

And that's why Nintendo needs to focus on creating a self sustaining software ecosystem that doesn't need third party games. They need to have as many first party and exclusive titles on their platforms as the competition has 3rd party titles on theirs. They need to get people in the mindset that if they don't buy Nintendo, they'll be missing out on exactly half of the best games of any given generation.

3rd Party games have the greatest disadvantage on Nintendo console since they have to compete against Nintendo. Nintendo publishing is the main reason that 3rd party avoid the console and at the same time it's Nintendo greatest strenght.

Concidering that average console owners only buy 2-3 games a year and that Nintendo normally produce 4-5 high quality games a years there it's much left for 3rd Party. Nintendo is a developer giant and makes some of the world best video games.

That's not even taking in consideration 2nd party like Retro studios, Monolith, ND cube, 1-up studio, Intelligent systems.

Then you have the partners ..... Alphadream, Atlus, Camelot software, Game Freak, Hal Laboratory, Jupiter, Level-5, Namco, Platinum games, SEGA, square enix.

This is the main competition on Nintendo consoles for 3rd party developers and then you have Ubisoft and activision that normally support Nintendo consoles.

Awesome thread.
Nintendo is a publishing monster, 1,7 billion games is incredible.
However, third-party support is important, even if they don't sell that much, to get a diversified line-up.

Compiling VGChartz sales, I made a ranking of major video games editors (PM if I forgot one) :
1) Nintendo : 1691,33
2) Activision-Blizzard : 657,70 (Blizzard : 53,48)
3) Sony : 656,40
4) Electronic Arts : 611,11
5) Ubisoft : 396,55
6) Capcom : 381,96
7) Namco Bandai : 341,66
8) Square-Enix : 324,37
9) Konami : 307,29
10) Sega : 283,37
11) Take-Two Interactive : 248,77
12) Microsoft : 221,06

Nice thread!!! It is always interesting to see how much more Nintendo games sell on Nintendo platforms vs Sony and MS on their respective platforms
