Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Hard Drive Question

I've been saving up money for the past few months so I can finally purchase a PS4. I only have a few weeks left before I'll have enough money to buy it, but one question is lingering on my mind, and that concerns the hard drive.

I know the main system comes with a 500 GB drive, which sounds like it should be enough. However, when I was at Gamestop a few weeks ago, I was checking out the PS4 section and noticed that most games at the very least require a 20 GB install. Some, like the new Wolfenstein, go all the way up to 50 GB.

I don't game all the time, but I play enough to the point that space might become an issue in the future, especially since the PS4 is still in it's first year and I plan on accumulating many games by the time the PS5 releases.

So my question is to all current PS4 owners, especially those who have multiple games installed. Has space been an issue for you guys, and if so, how many games on average can I have installed to the HDD before I need to worry?

the hdd space for me is the biggest issue hence why I haven't bought one yet. Each gen I probably get about 60-100 games per system so you do the math.

Space will proabably be an issue eventually for most everybody. 500 gigs will probably only hold about 10-12 retail games at most. You can replace the hard drive though if it be omes an issue...

Currently on my ps4 i have Pixel Junk Shooter, MLB the show, Trine 2, FFXIV, Thief, Watchdogs,COD, Sparkle 2, Tomb Raider, BF4, Flower, Titan Attacks, Pinabll Arcade, Mercenary Kings, Killzone SF, Resogun, Towerfall, Strike Suit Zer, Madden 25, Outlast, Dead Nation, Flow, Dont Starve, and Infamous SS, and i have 555GB free, i did however upgrade to a 1TB Hybrid HDD the day the system came out, Thing is if i ran into space issues i could delete a few of those games as i havent played them in a little while like Madden 25 and Infamous since i Platinumed it, but going forward i can see it becoming a issue if i want to keep all my games playable at all times but truth is certain games ill play and never go back to like BF4 only reason its still on my ps4 is i havent needed to delete it.

Upgrading th hard drive hold be done 1 tb drive will be plenty make sure you use the full fw from the ps site u must down down load the whole OS on a thumb stick drive

Space shouldn't be an issue for both within the first year. After that then it will but it also depends on how many games you play. This holiday will see the release of plenty of games. I am sure it will fill the HDD's from many gamers that currently own a current gen title. I have 115GB's left on mine and having about 12 Full games installed.

i don't think you will be playing more than 10 games at the same time, just delete whatever you have completed or not playing anymore before you upgrade to a larger HDD...

Yes hard drive space is a bit of an issue, i currently have 8 retail games installed on mine and around 10 digital games and i only have around 100GB's left.

I bought a 1TB drive. This is plenty. Just think about how many games you need to have concurrently on your PS4.

The games are very quick to install as you can play them long before they're finished installing.

If you think about an upgrade you should do it as soon as possible as you will lose all installed games when you're upgrading. So upgrading from a full 500GB drive is not a smart idea.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

One question is whether you prefer games on disc or digitally.
If you plan buying discs, with just an o casional PSN purchase, 500GB will be plenty enough.
If you plan going full digital, it would be wise to upgrade to 1TB out of the box, Seagate SSHD is very affordable and reliable. With that, you will probably be able to store 40-80 games on your HD, surely you don't plan to play all of them at the same time...
