Who says they don't play it?

When the Wii came out, people would show off Wii Sports to their friends, and those friends would go out and buy a Wii to play the game.

That's how the Wii became a phenomenon, because people loved playing Wii Sports.

In addition there is word of mouth, if your friend or someone else whose opinion you trust tells you something is awesome, you're more likely to try it out.

Not to mention people can see videos of games online, if the game looks awesome then they will be more likely to try it out (as a personal example, seeing splatoon's video made me really excited for the game)

you just said they didnt. If they arent upgrading how can they play? if they cant play? how can they know if its good or not? And no watching a video online will never be a replacement for actually playing the game. Same with word of mouth, im sure you've heard good things about a game but you didnt end up liking i know i did. And is a person really going to pluck down money for a hardware by word of mouth? kind of doubt it.

Trying it at a friends house is playing it without upgrading

People did so for the Wii, it was sold by people trying wii sports at friends house, getting word of mouth and seeing videos of it on TV and Youtube

These inspired many people to go out and buy the Wii for the games like Wii sports

for that to happen people would have to actual buy the systems. Not like Ninty was giving them away for free. And for them to want to buy the system they would have to have been inticed by what they saw. Obviously people arent inticed with WIiU so they are not buying them and the ones who did buy them arent gettign their friends to buy them. And lets be real its not like everyone has a friend who has every game system...unless you are still in grade school

Nintendo should be porting japanese titles to Western markets.

That, and they should be getting more japanese support for it.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Do u honestly believe all 29m owners of NSMB have played the sequel?

U cant give Wii Sports all the credit for Wii success, it played a large part but there were many other factors involved.

Word of mouth and videos are not nearly the same as playing a game.

No it isn't,  but it is often enough to convince people not to try it.

Not everyone has tried it, but many have heard the word of mouth, etc. And decided not to buy

Many have heard the poor word of mouth or seen videos of the games and decided it's not worth buying

or they have heard no word of mouth cause not that much people are buying it, which is just as bad as bad word of mouth. But at the end of the day it comes down to people not caring
