Games drive install base, not vice versa, you don't buy games to play hardware, you buy hardware to play games

If the games cannot drive the same sales and hardware as their predecessors, they aren't as well recieved.

A 2D Mario game that developed exciting new worlds to explore (this is what 3 and world did), if they devoted the same resources they used on galaxy, that would have been possible, a Mario kart that surpassed the Wii and DS versions.  Those would have driven sales.

Basically they needed to surpass what they offered on the DS, they didn't do that, in fact they fell well short of even that level

how did they fall short? in what way? its still very subjective. Maybe people are just satistfied with their DS versions of those games. and did not feel the need to upgrade. You still didnt answer my question, what games would have drove 3ds to DS level of sales? Another 2d mario? a better one? better to who?

Better to the consumers, the people who decide whether to buy or not

No, if games are good, they drive people to upgrade, because the people want to play the games so much they'll be willing to buy the new hardware in order to get the games.

Like I said, games drive hardware, great games will drive great sales, because people will desire those games.

They clearly fell short because people didn't desire the games, and the games didn't drive hardware sales

How does the consumer know if the game is better or worse if they havent played it?

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Who says they don't play it?

When the Wii came out, people would show off Wii Sports to their friends, and those friends would go out and buy a Wii to play the game.

That's how the Wii became a phenomenon, because people loved playing Wii Sports.

In addition there is word of mouth, if your friend or someone else whose opinion you trust tells you something is awesome, you're more likely to try it out.

Not to mention people can see videos of games online, if the game looks awesome then they will be more likely to try it out (as a personal example, seeing splatoon's video made me really excited for the game)

I think you are putting way too much stock into these games and your view is too black and white, by that logic games released on SNES, N64, GC and now WiiU must not have been that good because they each saw a drop in sales. Am I getting this right?

you just said they didnt. If they arent upgrading how can they play? if they cant play? how can they know if its good or not? And no watching a video online will never be a replacement for actually playing the game. Same with word of mouth, im sure you've heard good things about a game but you didnt end up liking i know i did. And is a person really going to pluck down money for a hardware by word of mouth? kind of doubt it.

Indeed, world was weaker than Mario 1 and 3 for example, Link to the Past was weaker than Zelda 1

N64 and GCN games were extremely weak as is the Wii U lineup

Trying it at a friends house is playing it without upgrading

People did so for the Wii, it was sold by people trying wii sports at friends house, getting word of mouth and seeing videos of it on TV and Youtube

These inspired many people to go out and buy the Wii for the games like Wii sports

Im sure a large advertisement campaign into Project Steam, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, and Smash Bros will jump start the sales of the system, also there is a 2D/2.5D Metroid game that should be coming through the pipeline in the next year or so that should also help the sales. Right now the system is going through a dry spot with games. Also another price cut is inevitable so that will help as well.

"I think it will be the HDS"-Me in regards to Nintendo's next handheld.

3DS has no games.  The only ones to look forward to are Theatrhythm Curtain Call and Super Smash Bros.

How.....HOW!!! HOW could you MISS Pokemon!!!!!!

On a side not. If this is the 3DS doing badly, selling 90-110k units a week after being on the market for a little over 3 years... what do you consider the rest of the consoles?
