3DS was a bad decision by Nintendo, instead of wasting their time and effort on 3D they shoulc have focused on making a more powerful handheld and loading it up with really great games, they haven't done that, the lack of a really good 2D Mario is a clear failure by Nintendo (NSMB 2 was garbage)

Its not a lack of games, its a lack of good games that have killed the 3DS

Anyone who thinks smartphones are a danger to the 3DS just don't get it, people want good games, and Nintendo has not delivered this gen, on the 3DS and the Wii U, that is what has killed them.

this is all very subjective. Except smartphones that is having an effect, period.

Nope, just as computers and freeware games had no effect on consoles, neither do smartphones and cheap phone games have an effect on handhelds.

Lack of good games on the other hand will have an effect.  An underpowered and overpriced system with an unwanted feature such as 3D, will have an effect.

Also its far from objective, as we know a well desired game can totally ignite system sales, it was NSMB that really turned the DS into a world beater, NSMB 2 had no such effect on the 3DS.

DS had 19 games that sold 5 million or more, 3DS has 5 (in fact by this point in its life, sales wise, the DS had about 8 such games already, a few of those were over 10 million, 3DS only has 1)

so where did all those DS players go? are you really telling me they are waiting for good games? Because those good games did have followups on 3ds so it has to be something. Underpowered? compared to what? How much more powerful should it have been. 3d? ill give you that, but so what? if people dont like it they dont use it, i dont. There is even a sku without it.

oh come on man. NSMB was the first 2d mario game released in more than a decade. Versus NSMB2 which is the third in the NEW series which shouldnt even be having that NEW anymore. Nothing to do with the quality, maybe people are tired of what is essentially a rehash and not gonna spend money on a new piece of tech to play a game that is just as good as one they own.

Sales are fine. Quality isnt subjective. I think 3ds has a great library

It is not doing straight out BAD, but currently the 3DS glory days are over

Also not to sound even more negative, but even though the 3DS has sold 60million units, how many of those are UNIQUE gamers? I got 6 x 3DS (3DS, 3DS XL, Zelda 3DS, Zelda 3DXL, Pokemon 3DXL and Yoshi 3DXL). Now if you check out my 'Show us your 3DS collection so far' thread, other people in there have multiple 3D's too. I know its anecdotal, but I would say a lot of the Nintendo core would have at least 2 x 3DS. In my opinion the actual UNIQUE install base is around 30-40million.

Now people will argue this happens with every console and in fact it does, however look at the vast range of 3DS options, i.e colours and the limited edition ones Nintendo have pumped out with 3DS, most gamers will want at least one of those in addition to their playing 3DS.

I wouldn't put much weight in how many consoles / games people that frequent gaming forums have.  There are people that post collections of over >100 games, yet average attach rates are <10.

I don't care how much Nintendo focuses or doesn't focus on the 3DS. I only bought that to play Fire Emblem and Link Between Worlds.

I would be just as fine having never bought 3DS, if they could have new Fire Emblem and Zelda game on Wii U.

Anytime I do play 3DS, it is at home, and the WiiU Gamepad is a better portable console for use at home than 3DS can ever be. Larger screen, better speakers, better graphics, dual-analog, better buttons/triggers, etc. Much faster/better for things like MiiVerse as well.

I personally see a lot of 3DS doom and gloom

But it Probably IS probably just because of the much needed attention they're giving the Wii U. It's been pretty slow on games for the first half of the year too so that helped.

Beside's, it's "glory" days, started to decline in April, so I wouldn't get too worried...yet

I'm trying to understand why some people are mentioning "smartphones and tablets" in this topic.

Smartphones and Tablets compete with the Handhelds? Yes, but its only a very small competition now (maybe in the future Smartphones interfere in Handheld market). People who want to play games in Smartphones are different people who want a 3ds or a Vita. These people don't want to play Mario, Zelda, etc. For they, these games are too complex and too long. They want games like Angry Birds, which is simple, cheap and funny. That's why there only a few "hardcore" games in the Smartphones.

Smartphones and Tablets aren't the responsible for 3ds sales drop. The lack of games and their price are the reasons for the sales drop. Its time for Nintendo make a price drop for 3ds games, something like $29.99 for new releases and $19.99 after a year of release. Also, 3ds needs more good indie games. Something like escape goat or something.

3ds will drop off

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

If VGC software sales estimates are accurate then the 3DS software sales this year are troubling. VGC has 3DS & PS4 very close, which is terrible considering 3DS has 5X the user base.
