Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Would the Wii U be in a much better state if MK8 released last Christmas?

Doubtful, Wii U is just a supergamecube, and the inclusion of a single good game won't save it.

Nintendo would have been better off had they dumped the touchpad, made the system more powerful or a whole lot cheaper, skipped the 3D mario and actually put some effort into a good 2D mario instead of phoning it in with NSMB U

No. A 3D Mario > Mario Kart.

Mario Kart 8 was just the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak. Many were on standby for another big time exclusive and MK8 just happened to be it.

I myselff bought the Wii U for MK8. I have no intention to purchase DK now no plan at all to purchase 3D World. MK8 is the first killer app.  People aren't going to buy 3D World or DK in masses after MK8.

So you dont even have 3D world, but you call it 'disappointing'? Yeah that makes sense...

I definitely think that the Wii U would be now right on track if MK8 released in the more important moment of the year, the holiday season.

Last year Nintendo released the disappointing Mario 3D World as their main game, and it sold terribly.

With just one week end counted, Mario Kart already sold around 60% of 3D World's total, which included weeks of holidays. It was a major mistake to not release MK8 during the holiday season.

This is right now the very first killer app of the console.

Disappointing for them, awesome for the gamers who actually got it.

...

I kinda want to play it now but I'm hosting a tournament...

Mediocre sales, didn't move consoles, didn't give the Wii U any momentum, wasted resources that could have gone into making other better games (or improving other games) that would have sold systems.

Yeah, sounds pretty disappointing

'Better' is a very vague word, given that it was arguably the best game of the last year. (For sheer Zelda-fanboyism I can't say it was, but it was pretty orgasmic.)

That said if they wanted to play the PR game, and they really need to, you're probably right that the masses may well have been more attracted to other games they could have tried to make much flashier.

It was not the best game, reviews don't decide success, sales and profitability do, if it had been the best game, Nintendo would not be reporting a loss for the last fiscal year

It would have been in a slightly better state.

As a designer I'm gonna tell you an important adage that you can take with you:

"Success does demand quality, but quality does not demand success."

From a quality angle it was quite possible the best game of the last year, from a success angle you're completely right.

Books are touted as best selling, not best reviewed.

Without sales or profitability, you cannot define best, it is the consumers who have all the power, not the reviewers or the fanbois

Probably would be. I don't know though it's too hard to say since we haven't seen hardware yet
