I definitely think that the Wii U would be now right on track if MK8 released in the more important moment of the year, the holiday season.

Last year Nintendo released the disappointing Mario 3D World as their main game, and it sold terribly.

With just one week end counted, Mario Kart already sold around 60% of 3D World's total, which included weeks of holidays. It was a major mistake to not release MK8 during the holiday season.

This is right now the very first killer app of the console.

Maybe... 500,000-600,000 the week before chrismas! :D

3D World couldn't have been further from disappointing. It may not have sold like hot cakes but it was a bloody fantastic game which is one of the best Mario games ever. And no I think this is the perfect time to release Mario Kart as otherwise the WiiU would be dragged along like a lifeless corpse until Christmas.

No. A 3D Mario > Mario Kart.

Mario Kart 8 was just the straw that broke the camels back, so to speak. Many were on standby for another big time exclusive and MK8 just happened to be it.

I myselff bought the Wii U for MK8. I have no intention to purchase DK now no plan at all to purchase 3D World. MK8 is the first killer app.  People aren't going to buy 3D World or DK in masses after MK8.
