Haveing a tablet funktion as a homeconsole gives you a "jack of all trades, master of none" situation.
Its a good all around device, both on the go and as a homeconsole.

However it might be less well suited to gameing on the go, than a 3DS successor might have been.
It is less well suited (performance/$) to being a home console, than a real home console is.

That to me means home consoles (the traditional types) arnt going anywhere.
Playstation 5, and Xbox Two, wont be tablets with docking stations.

This is just nintendo doing something differnt.

Their product is more than just a home console, its also a handheld.

Consoles now just being mirrors of one another as cheap PC's with a custom UI are becoming irrelevent and it doesn't have to be that way. Not from the tablet side but the PC side. If consoles were actual consoles again then they might be ok. Sony and MS are stagnating the market.

Switch is a transition machine. Its them saying that Nintendo going full mobile is on the way. Same with PSNow and Play Anywhere from Xbox. Consoles themselves will be gone... probably within the next 10 years. Lets face it. The hardware is changing too fast for consoles anyway. We should still be in Xbox One/PS4 territory for the next 3-5 years. But even they are seeing that they need new hardware more frequently. And paying $400 bucks for a new machine every few years won't sit right with gamers.

So how do you fix it? You get rid of consoles.

I was gonna come here to callout OP, saw the thread was made in 2014. Gg, OP, gg...

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Consoles will evolve, Switch is just the first of them, the beginning.

But it is true, tablets and phones are getting much more powerful each year. High end mobile devices surpassed PS3 a few years ago. The idea of a dock with an additional power source, and fan when docked means mobile devices can ustilize more energy to power those chips.

In addition, there's the factor that mobile devices have a much larger place in our lives now than they did 10 years ago. Consoles as we know them are a shrinking market.

If a screen and a GPU is what makes a tablet, then wasn't the original Game-Boy and every handheld since also a tablet?

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Thats essentially my point in the OP 2 years ago.  Now, 2 years later it only seems obvious.  I am only kind of surprised at the people unwilling to accept the idea even with an actual console coming out that way.

It is near the end of the end....

So, here we are.  It didn't take Long!  The next generation of Consoles starts with a console that is a TABLET, the Switch!

Nintendo are not trend setters that the other systems will follow (barring an enormous success happens).

Nintendo goes their own way.  But, clearly they do things that all others copy(motion controls, many others).  They are just SLOW to match common features in other game systems.

I Still think the future is tablet based consoles or no console at all...
