To continue advetisng very well, hype up the game . much much better directs and be more open. don't keep secrets too much...so much attention when they spoke about the game and also when they revealed the numbers.

While I don't disagree with your assumptions, I would like to note that a very big difference in MK8 as compared to say SM3DW was actually in how it was presented and marketed by Nintendo.

MK8 had its own well done ND
SM3DW was part of a larger, less interesting ND.

MK8 had numerous TV and print commercials that showed the game in a good fun light
SM3DW made the game look kiddy/girly/boring. Later commercials post-release were better but far inbetween and no print/add/store stuff.

MK8 had a great bundle at launch that was also heavily advertised.
SM3DW had no bundle at all or any launch promotion.

I think we'll see MK8 style marketing and promotion for future Nintendo games on WiiU. Nintendo has to realize the significant difference.

This also greatly helps WiiU hardware sales as it creates awesome buzz for the console and demonstrates strong software that is available.

For Zelda I hope Nintendo realizes people want a big epic Zelda here, not A Link Between Worlds 2 or even Wind Waker 2. Nuh uh. Not flying Nintendo.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I wouldn't mind a Wind Waker 2 in the slightest. WW is my favorite Zelda game. That being said, I doubt a cartoony Zelda would bode well for sales, so I'm hesitant to hope for one.

Honestly I think Zelda U will look like the SSB4 character model. The one in the cinematic trailers, anyway. Just less detailed.

there is a sequel to Windwaker its called the phantom hourglass

What I hope they learn:

1. More balancing and skill orientated gameplay. I have my doubt to whether Mario Kart 8 is less random than other recent Mario Karts. If you're good at Mario Kart you'd almost always win and that's true of all of them. That said many people do seem to think this one's fairer and that's a message that's being positively received.

2. More Luigi! He quirky personality was bound to hit a meme or two eventually.

3. More local multiplayer. It's something that only nintendo prioritises. You don''t really get it from tablets or that much from rival consoles.

4. More free games. I think this was a great excuse for people who were on the fence to take the plunge. Free games also mean people play the console more. Making the console a bigger and more positive part of someones life and could (And this is completely theoretical and not base off any empirical evidence) increase game sales in the long term.

What I hope they don't learn:

1. Stick Mario in the title of every game they make.

2. Focus on incremental updates to past big games.

3. Nobody cares that much about PVP battles.

4. Everyone raves about how great it looks... Graphic > gameplay for customers.

True, though I've not gotten a whole lot of enjoyment out of the handheld Zeldas. At least not compared to their console counterparts. Meant more like a full sequel rather than something that felt spinoff-ish.

Just because Mario Kart 8 sold better does not mean it did anything special gamewise. I mean let's be honest, it's basically MK7 in HD, just like you could say SM3DW is SM3DL in HD, and DKCTF is DKCR in HD. Of course there are new mechanics n features, but the core gameplay remains the same. The reason Mario Kart 8 sold better is simply because it's Mario Kart. Also, Mario Kart 8's online is definitely not solid with all them disconnects, but that'll hopefully get fixed.

Sorry, but no. You do have a slight point that SM3DW and DKCTF are "HD" versions of their prior games, even IF both games are, in general, much better (And not just graphics-wise) than their predecessors. HOWEVER, MK8 is not "basically MK7 in HD".

Want to know why? Because, quite frankly, outside of a handful of cool track ideas in MKDS, the MK franchise has been treading water as far as track designs go since MKDD on GC. An AWFUL lot of the new tracks in DD, a few in DS, a LOL in Wii, and even many in MK7, were very uninpsired or bland. MK8 has exactly zero tracks like that, the new ones are all at least GOOD, and go from great on up awesome from there. The retro tracks, while there are several I WISH they would have chosen instead of the ones they did, are not just graphically updated, but in many cases largely remade, and none of THEM are terrible either. The track designs for the new tracks are, at least for some of them, genuinely fresh and inspired. The graphics speak for themselves, and it's the first time since MK64 that the franchise has taken a MAJOR graphical leap. It's the first MK game not to basically have midi music. It's the first MK game in quite awhile to at least TRY to have better racer and item balancing. And simply put, it's the first MK in a long time to feel "Big". As in a big deal, and not just "Oh cool, another one".

So yeah, MK8 deserves its success on it's own merits. It is a FAR better game than MKWii and 7 were, that's for damn sure. That isnt' to say it's flawless. The Battle Mode is half-assed dogshit, and personally not happy about that part at all. But, the racing part is fairly excellent, so I have to give the game a fairly positive rating overall. Once Nintendo gets their servers settled, the online alone is worth it. And the new MKTV feature really seems to be catching on. So hopefully this one keeps on selling for some time.
