I wonder how much Real Madrid wants for Ronaldo if he indeed wants to leave. You gotta remember that the guy is already 32, it's not like whatever team buys him would get another 6-8 years of a world class player out of him.

Exactly! It won't be long until he starts the inevitable decline. And there's practically no resale value on him now either. He'd be a player worth having on any team in the world, but I don't think he's a player worth paying a world record fee for or anything like that, not at his current age at least.

Then again whatever team buys him will immediately sell a fuck ton of Ronaldo kits. If a club like United were to sign him you'd have hundreds of thousands if not millions of people from all over the world buying United kits with Ronaldo on the back within the first few weeks.

You're paying 120-150million for him but...

The shirt sales o.0..

Cristiano Ronaldo has apparently told Real Madrid he wants to leave the club and doesn't want to play in Spain anymore after being accused of tax fraud by the Spanish authorities... :O

Honestly, even if this rumour is true and he has asked to leave, I can't see it happening. I'm sure he and the club would work something out for him to stay, at least for now anyways. But him leaving suddenly just doesn't seem at all likely to me. Although if he did... where would he go? And what would the transfer fee be?

Los Angeles Football Club has been salivating over the chance to get him.  I'd say it's still a long shot, but they have some deep pockets and Ronaldo has the impact to make them pay a massive transfer fee.  Issue would be exactly how much Madrid would demand and if Ronaldo really wants to leave and would be fine with Los Angeles.

He'd also have to sit out the next eight or nine months until LAFC actually plays, unless they do a temporary loan deal.  Or a different MLS team gets him, of course.

To Major League Soccer he'd be worth his weight in gold at this exact moment.  The league has grown nicely but they still want the big names to drive up interest, sales and just overall discussion.  MLS is rarely mentioned on ESPN, ever.  Ronaldo would change that.  The league badly wanted Zlatan to provide a short-term spark but then life happened.  They're also targeting Chicharito and that would be an extremely fruitful get, but Ronaldo is on a different plane, similar to Beckham when he signed with the Galaxy.  Like you alluded to, the jersey sales would pay back most of their investment, just like with Becks.

He's also said he wants to play in the league eventually so maybe the time is now.

Still, MLS doesn't get to play any big competition. Mexican teams are the biggest he would play and it's doubtful that he wins concachampions to play the club world tournament.

He still has good years of top level competition before he moves to MLS or China. He obviously wants another Ballon D'Or

I guess that's the real question. Does Ronaldo only want a huge payday? MLS will still be willing to pay a bit in a couple years but not nearly as much as right now. Or is it his legacy that will drive the motivation behind his next decisions? If that's the case then yeah, the US will have to take a backseat. Beckham seemed largely satisfied that his European legacy was intact when he crossed over, although even he had second thoughts when the Galaxy had a crap team his first year here. I have no idea where Ronaldo is right now, how much he feels he still has to prove, and that's probably the most important detail.

Honestly I think he could still demand the same salary if he moved to the MLS in a few years time. Not the same transfer fee obviously, but if he were moving at the end of a contract for free or something I'm sure they'd still be willing to pay him a huge weekly wage.

Edit: Seems the obvious choice is for him to go to Man City for 2-3 seasons since then they can transfer him over to New York City for no cost. And I'm not just saying that as a Man City fan

That's fair enough, especially if his name at that point is still good enough to sell jerseys(and at the moment I don't see any particular reason why it wouldn't be).  Kaká and Villa are still commanding great base salaries, and I already mentioned Zlatan who could have practically written his own figure if he wanted.  Still, it seems his maximum value to the league would be right here right now, at the same age as when Beckham signed, when his elite player status is not in any doubt.

Your suggestion would work, he'd probably be replacing Villa and who knows, NYC might actually be playing on a soccer pitch by then.

You can see a former Manchester United player playing for their rival club under Real Madrid's rival ex manager?

Way to piss off 2 groups of the 2 biggest clubs in the world, he still doesn't celebrate when he scores against United I highly doubt he'll join city.

Soooo no one else was watching Confed Cup?
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't watching it either.

Does someone know if Chile or Portugal take this thing somewhat serious? Germany is playing with a reserve team, with the exception of a few defensive players.

Nope, if there's 1 football competition on this Earth I don't give a fuck about it's the Confederation's cup.

IMO they should just do away with it and organize a proper World Cup for clubs instead every 4 years. Winners of the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Champions League (if the 2013 and 2014 winner are the same team then 2014's #2 gets the ticket and so on), do the same for CAF (Africa), CONCACAF (North America), CONMEBOL (South America), 3 spots for Asia and 1 for Oceania and you've got 20 clubs to participate. Put them in 4 groups of 5, top 2 of each group continue to a 8 team knockout stage and you might have a proper international competition for clubs every 4 years.
