Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do people make such a big deal about backwards compatibility?

If PS4 and Xbox One had backwards compatibility, maybe the systems wouldn't be nothing but later released last gen ports.

^^ Bang. Bang.

Another reason why I'm strongly considering the Steam Machine over the XBO/PS4. Not only does it laugh at the idea of backwards compatability, but most of those games will look and play better for like $5.

It's a great feature, but we've been convinced that it's not necessary, mostly because it's easier for Sony/MS not to include it in their systems.

For me, it means being able to play older games I missed. I did not own the Xbox 360 last gen, and now I have the Xbox One and would love to be able to try some of those games out. Can't argue with adding such a huge library to your arsenal instantly when backwards compatible, right? :)

Awesome first post on the site and I agree with you entirely. BC allows gamers to breeze by the game draught that comes on every new systems launch because they can use it to finish off some of the great last gen games while they wait.

Welcome to the site btw.

It's weird how it wasn't a big deal when Atari did it, but then it was a huge deal when Sony did it. Now that only Nintendo does it, it's nothing important again.

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

If you got the master base convertor you can use Master system games on a Megadrive.

Heck you can even use original Game boy carts in the GBC... and GBC carts in the gba... and gba carts in the DS.... and DS carts in the 3DS. Weird how people think BC isn't a great thing but possibly the most successful series of handhelds ever created all have it, infact the only Nintendo handheld I can think of which doesn't have BC is the virtual boy lol.

When I read the thread title I supposed this came from a person that doesn't know what's to be on a tight budget and after reading the post, I was proven right.

ok enough with the crap, have you tried playing emulation on the PC and what hardware is required to play PS2 let alone PS3 games, the hardware in the next gen consoles is not up to the job of emulating the previous generation of games, the hardware is completely different from the previous generation, what part of this do you lot not understand, you think it's that simple to emulate an entire system!, maybe you lot need to face the reality that BC just is not feasible on these new consoles from Sony and Microsoft, if you really want to play your old games just get the old system and play them there.

Interesting assumption. Too bad you're completely wrong.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Because it should simply exist.

All other digital media has BC. Some for many generations like discs and iOS/Android.

In gaming being able to sell my past console because my new one can play the same games, is awesome. Less clutter in home and it lowers my entrance free to next gen.

Not including BC is simply a dick move.

Because my PS3 is huge and I would have really liked to store it away so my husband doesn't complain about how much space my consoles take. *high fives NiKKoM*
