Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo to offer Wii DLC and you have to pay for some online games X_X

Lots of initial overreacting, but it seems everyone has come back down to earth now.

I'm glad to hear this, as it means Nintendo is taking a step forward in the online arena. I still don't think this will effect most online Wii games, as everyone has said, it's probably just for MMO's(like Phantasy Star Online) and downloadable content(like Guitar Hero).

If games like Phantasy Star Online could take place on the GameCube, I don't see why they can't take place on the Wii. I do hope that any future MMO's will lead to Nintendo allowing full SD card use, or a hard drive attachment.

I've read interviews from the Guitar Hero/Activision folk where they mentioned they were working something out with Nintendo to allow songs to be bought/downloaded for Guitar Hero. Maybe this has something to do with the announcement also.

Although it is doubtful, I'm hoping this is opening the door for a real online service for the Wii. I, along with others, had made threads in the old Nsider forums mentioning the willingness to pay for a respectful online service. The idea is that Nintendo can keep the WiFi service they have now for people casually interested in online gaming, but have a "Pro" service for people that want lobbies, voice chat, true friends lists, etc. The NoA's had pretty much said the current online service is what it is because of Nintendo's legal team. In other words, to shield Nintendo from lawsuits and bad press, rather than giving gamers exactly what they want. It's not like this idea(an XBL-like service) never occurred to Nintendo, but as time goes by things will have to change.

Great news actually. Now this pretty much confirms future MMO games for Wii :)

Of course, Wii haters don't like that.

Sorry I have not read all 3 pages of posts, but I don't see there being a problem it just opens the opportunity for MMO's and other publisher supported games. I think that basic on-line games will remain free.

now only sony's left with entirely free online play. but for how long...

Im also not going to read all 4 pages but Sony has you pay to play FF11 online as well since its an MMO. Nintendo has now opened the oppurtunity to have MMO's just like Sony does that cost a fee to play. How does this make Wiis online any less Free than Sonys? The online gaming is still free, WFC is still free, but now they dont have to miss out on the MMO market on the Wii anymore. This is a new option being added for developers, which is why is was announced at the Game Developers Conference.

How exactly is this a bad thing? Sony has the same system and everyone calls PSN free. Why is WFC suddenly now not free seeing as they now offer the same service?

3rd party games always had the option of charging a fee to play online on the Wii. I'll post a link in a little while. PS3 is the console that offers free, dedicated servers with no lags whatsoever. The only games that will charge a fee are MMOs.

"There is no charge for connecting to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or for playing any Nintendo first-party games. Third-party developers are free to decide whether to charge fees for playing their games through the service."

Wikipedia says the same thing.
