Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Disgusted with the loss of Innovation (Kinect)? (/rant)

Ever since the wii controller, everybody tries to innovate in the wrong direction.

If its as great as OP says then people will buy it as an option.

Kinect is a camera or webcam with a name. There is nothing innovative about it. It didn't spark a revolution in the way we played games. It didn't spawn hundreds of imitation Kinects. It just was.

Why did Microsoft make the Kinect in the first place? To capitalize on that motion control craze that Nintendo created. And in that regard, the Wii was actually innovative. Motion controls from Sony and Microsoft were a direct result of the gaming market that Nintendo tapped into and built up. The Kinect was a byproduct of Nintendo's motion control technology and it has been rejected by the market.

The Kinect did not leave a meaningful impact and thus is not an innovation.

I think the general audience is tired of motion gaming. After a while waving your hands and legs around in front of the TV becomes ... stale and predictable to be honest.

Kinect 2.0 actually is pretty impressive tech ... the level of motion sensing that it enables is pretty impressive, but it's just not applicable in a satisfying way to many games. Like they could make a basketball game for example that's gesture based ... but really at that point, why not just step outside my home and play real basketball rather than miming it in front of my TV. There's only so many dance/fitness/sports games that can be made too. A lot of people just want to sit down and relax when playing a video game.

To be honest, most of these "innovations" like the DS with its touch screen, EyeToy/Move/Kinect/WiiMote, ... these technologies were trying to innovate, but these input devices were simply inferior to a standard controller.

You have tight controls with a control pad and it does its job. There is almost no room to further improve... to be honest, the controller were never my problem since the NES days. They have become a problem because companies tried to fix something that never really was broken. They got blinded by the Wii success (because the fitness games had a few very strong years), but ultimaley none of these control devices really had a lasting impact....

3D was pushed and it seems that most people simply do not care about it. I think that VR is the next thing that will be pushed but will ultimately be neglected by most of the gamer and developers after a few years.

The one thing that needs really new ideas are the games. I got the feeling that in the last few years the genres were narrowed down and that most games tried to be the next CoD. There was more diversity in the last generations...

I agree. I'll get mine with a kinect.

Today as a gamer I WIN!!!

How do gamers lose? Now I can buy an XBone for $100 less and if I really want a Kinect 2.0 I can get one from someone who doesn't want it for like $20 on Craigslist. So in the end I would save $80.

To me that makes gamers win.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Looks like PS4 killed the Kinect.

Microsoft made the kinect as a skype and a justdance machine.
No 3rd party innovation for it.
