Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Gamepad is a fantastic idea and gaming controller.

It's not a good controller because it doesn't have good games. Any piece of hardware is only as good as the software that it runs. The Playstation Move for example was better on many levels than the Wii Mote, but it sucked because it had no good games. It's hard to really argue that the Vita is superior to the 3DS on a technological level (although I do like having two screens) but the software for the 3DS is much better, so the 3DS is the better system.

You could argue potential, but I can't play potential. Aside from Nintendo Land, certain parts of Wii Fit Plus, and to a lesser extent, Zombi U, Wonderful 101, and Scribblenauts, there aren't really any games that make the Gamepad worthwhile aside from offscreen play. So, until the appropriate software comes out, I sadly can't say the Gamepad was a good idea or a good controller.

A good controller is one where you forget you are using it..

Off-TV gameplay makes EVERY game worthwhile. It is the sole reason the gamepad is perfect.

Don't you ever get tired of making Nintendo out to be some sort of victim for their own promotional mistakes?

There are reason people are not into the Wii U, other than blind Nintendo hate. As for the controller being the superior to Xbox's and Sony's, I can't say for sure.

I totally fine with the controller, but I can see some (little) people not liking it.

Love the controller; wish more was being done with it.

But I do think we need another revolution in gaming...the Gamepad opens doors, but doesn't actually walk through them.

If off tv play is the only reason for it, then there would be no reason to bundle the gamepad.  If it is only for off TV play and is not integrated in to gameplay, it could be offered as an accessory.  Those interested in Off TV play could enjoy it, those who don't care could ignore it.  That would allow the system to be cheaper or more powerful.

That unhealthy love for the Wii U and 3DS makes people believe that there's no space in the market anymore for a Nintendo home console and a Nintendo handheld, but all those two failures mean is that the GameCube DNA will never work. Yes, the 3DS is full of GC DNA, in case you haven't noticed. Nintendo can easily make more home consoles and handhelds, they just have to make sure that the hardware doesn't suck so hard that it drags everything down with it. When you look at Nintendo's updated shipments for Mario Kart 7 and New Super Mario Bros. 2, those two games have barely moved during the last year. This shows that the people who buy the 3DS are those who embrace Nintendo's N64/GC ways, and the only reason why the 3DS doesn't sell as low as the two aforementioned home consoles is that it doesn't face a PS1/PS2. If the 3DS reached the usual Nintendo handheld audience, then its "evergreens" would be actual evergreens.

I'm not gonna argue with all of what you say here, Rol, but I'm pretty tempted to call these bolded statements at least questionable.

Mario Kart 7 sold almost 2 million copies in its third year on the market, and will easily sell over a million copies in its fourth year on the market. It charted at 31st place last week (week 126). It at least is seeming quite evergreen.
The two big platformers are also going 1+ million third year, and SM3DL still may, just barely, hit 1 mil 4th year.

They are not as massive as their predecessors, maybe they would be if they reached the "usual" incredibly massive audience, but there are still no other titles on the market I can think of as evergreen as these three right now.

i quite like the gamepad myself and see good opportunities for an extra screen in gaming but it is interesting to see why it doesn't appear to be selling, you say No to the "MSony" crowd and i suppose the "Wii" crowd said No too,who is left to sell too

it shows the power of motion control and getting so called "non gamers" involved and hitting the mainstream media something that the "gamepad" just didn't achieve

@salnax

people aren't just buying the PS4,
4.5m bought the XONE too so 12m people buying next gen systems, doesn't seem strange to me out of a 150m userbase of the PS360 which released way back in 2006/7,plenty of things to keep the loyalists happy and buying

Agree. I was also pretty skeptical about it before picking up the Wii U, as it looked big and clunky. However, once I got it in my hands, it was surprisingly light and comfortable, and the screen is quite sharp. A nice controller, and very handy for off-TV play.
