I approve of this post. Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Throne of Blood are also required viewing.

@OP: I'm not sure where to start. We have access to over 115 years of cinema. Sometimes it can be overwhelming.

I guess I would start your journey with some of the early masters: Lang, Eisenstein, Dreyer, Chaplin, Renoir, Capra, Welles, Hitchcock, Wilder, Cocteau, and Wyler.

Good luck!

i hate that movie with a passion. SO boring!!

If you're interesting in a good samurai movie with great characters and plot then watch Seven Samurai
If you're interested in a extremely fucked movie with sadomasochism and good gore then watch Ichi The Killer
If you're interested in a good mafia movie then watch The Godfather (stay away from the 3rd) and Goodfellas, Scarface
If you're interested in good 70s classics then watch A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, One Who Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Deliverance, and The Deer Hunter
If you're interested in good war movies then watch The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, and Letters from Iwo Jima
If you're interesting in a good western then watch The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
If you're interesting in med evil or fantasy movies then watch Lord of the Rings trilogy and Star Wars
Other's: The Exorcist, Oldeboy(the original. please god stay away from the remake), Terminator Series, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill series, Natural Born Killers, Inception, The Shawnshank Redemption, CaddyShack, Resivoir Dogs, Fight Club, The Matrix, Silence of the Lambs, (there are more movies can't I can't think of them right now...)

Anime/animated movies
Frozen (yes, I know)
Tangled
The Incredibles
Fox and the Hound
The Secret of Kells
Spirited Away
Puella Magica Madok
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
How's Moving Castle
Castle in the Sky
5 Centimeters per second
Arrietty
Paprika

That's all the movies I can think of from the top of my head.

I'm a David Lynch man...
I'd recommend Blue Velvet, Elephant Man, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, The Straight Story (inland empire was kinda 'huh' even by lynch standards and lost highway was boring)...oh and Eraserhead is amusing.

But steer clear of DUNE.
