To achive proper realism, you need better AA, more complex geometry and character models, superior lightning and physics, waay more detailed (and thus bigger) textures, more realistic (and thus more demanding) animations, motion capture and much more polygons. There is also stuff like particle effects and clothing animation. Did I really have to explain this?
Except for textures and a certain extent of character models, all of that could be done in a cartoony game. You're talking about effort put into the game period, which, as i said, is a factor that cartoony games tend to be lower-budget on the whole. They do not have to be.
A cartoony game is more than just art style, simple animations etc etc are a staple of cartoony things also. Is for example how one anime can be cartoony, and another reaistic. Fact is, Mario Kart has none or next to none of the above. So if it does 1080p/60fps it isn't really as much an accomplishment as say, GT6 doing it. Mario Kart is more in line with Wipeout HD, which was also 1080p 60fps.
Lot of Ninty fans being defensive in this thread saying it looks great, but no real arguments why it does. They just like the artstyle, and some are probably not used to seeing Nintendo games in HD so there will be a noticable clarity in visuals from those who been playing MK Wii.
What they really should be defending is SSBU, mixing in some more human/realistic characters with the cartoony ones really shows how awful it looks, unlike MK where everything matches.
