Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The 3DS' 3D feature was a good move

If the 3d worked well i would agree... But it doesnt. When you have to hold a handheld system at a specific angle at a specific distance, that is a problem. 3d was a terrible mistake, but i still like my 3ds... I just always play with the 3d turned off!

You can have the 3DS, anywhere from 5 inches to 30 inches away.

The best distance is anywhere from 5 to 15 inches for the 3D on the regular 3DS.

Yeah, i have a 3ds, i know how it works.  The 3d effect definitely does not have that kind of range.  There is a sweet spot.  If you move your head slightly, or the 3ds moves, the image will start to blur.  It is a terrible 3d effect.  I would have rather had them pack in a pair of 3d glasses then put up with the crappy 3d effect we get with a 3ds now!

I used it for resident evil. Turned it off after that

I like the 3d effect. There are some games where it's distracting and some where it gives useful depth perception, but for most it just adds a nice visual effect that enriches most games. Normally I have it turned to the max.

I hope Nintendo sticks with it for their next handheld, but that probably depends on what it costs it adds to manufacturing. Can't imagine it's that high.

I disagree whole heartedly, if anything 3D played a role in poor sales more so than the success.
with a standard display the hardware would have been cheaper.

the 3d did very little to push the console that was pulling piss poor numbers until... dun dun duuun... games started coming for the system, most people play with the 3d turned off, so much so that the 2ds doesnt even allow it to be turned on.

It was a gamble, and it almost killed the handheld, focusing more on games and not the 3d feature is what rescued the 3ds.

The Nintendo 2DS has been on the market for 7 months since release in October 12, and has only sold 2.2 million.

Seems like no one wants a cheap 2D 3DS that has no 3D.

Theres a reason why no one buys a PS Vita.

Not to mention that they recently reduced the price of the 2DS to $99.99¢ because of its underperforming sales.

Been on the market 7 months and has sold 2.2 million, how many Wiiu has sold in the past 7 months? i guess you'll freely say nobody wants the WiiU too?

Nobody buys the Vita because of its lacking games library, 2ds doesnt sell as well as the 3ds because rather than make it a sleek DS style design they made it in to an awkward, easy to scratch-screen cheese wedge.

If you think people still buy 3ds en-masse because of the 3D functionality, you're barking up the wrong tree.

In Resident Evil: Revelations, you are suppose to go to Options, and change Depth, from Normal to either Strong or Very Strong.

For the 3D in that game.

You should play 2013 3DS games in 3D.

Then why come recent 3D movies like "Gravity" get up to 80% of their sales from 3D?
