Forums - Nintendo Discussion - will the Mario Kart 8 promotion sell Wii Us?

Will this promotion work in selling more WiiUs?

Simple question really. Nintendo is being supremely generous with this offer (especially in Europe), will it work?

I've seen numerous people on these boards saying they'll buy a wii u now, will they? Will you? Have you?

People are clearly psyched for this, but will it work for Nintendo?

Wii U sales will see a nice short term boost from MK8 because it's MK8. The promotion may push a few more people over the edge in addition but it needs to be advertised properly

Yes of course. I think the more important question is 'how many'.

Nintendo needs to take this momentum and use it to consistently boost the Wii U's recognition. If they can hype up Mario Kart 8, and then hype up the Wii U through E3, and then keep the hype going with game after game after game, then the Wii U sales will become healthy again.

I hope they advertise the promotion - it's good value

Obviously it will moves some Wii U's. I think you should ask if it will put the weekly numbers above 30k permanently, or even save the Wii U.

Definitely will cause an increase because its a great offer. The important thing is the Mariokart and console bundle and this will do most good for the 3-4 months of the christmas season. It depends on pricing and marketing though. I think if they want to do well this christmas the bundle needs to be sub £200 in the UK. PS3 is still doing good business in Europe and that is really the competitor the wii u is competing with. I don't think people are buying a wii u for a next gen experience and performance level. Whatever your views on its performance level its simply not getting those games.

I hope that MK8 boosts Wii U sales (and I am sure it will in the short term), but I am worried that many of the 35 million people who bought MK for the Wii will believe this new version will work in their Wii as well. I think most of the causals that bought a Wii do not even realize that the Wii U is a whole new console. How will they react when they get the game home and find out that their Wii only spits it out?

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.

NNID = RangerOne

It will shift Wii Us as part of the bundle.

It probably won't shift very many systems based on the free game offer. What that will do getting established users to get the game early, and to familiarize themselves with the concept of downloadable retail titles.

Nintendo's audience are traditionally quite hung up on physical products, so this is probably meant as a bit of a carrot for them to get into using the eShop more.
