Forums - Gaming Discussion - Tim Sweeney (Epic): 1/3 of AAA titles, Triple the Budget compared to last gen..

http://www.edge-online.com/features/three-new-epic-games-incoming-as-unreal-engine-looks-to-define-a-new-generation/

At E3 and later this year, however, we’ll see plenty more games built on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, says Sweeney. “There’s a lot [of games] on the way and a large number of them haven’t been announced,” he tells us. “You’ll see lots of triple-A stuff coming out over time. The industry’s changing – this generation it seems like there are about a third of the number of triple-A titles in development across the industry as there was last time around – and each one seems to have about three times the budget of the previous generation. I think we’re heading towards a future where triple-A is the minority.

AAA is doomed...

Wasn't AAA always the minority?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

For whatever reason i read that as Sweeney Todd at first -_- I was very confused lol

To be honest, I would be perfectly fine with games that have PS2 level graphics. As long as they are clear, and play properly.

Not till we had those 99% of shitty "indie" games..
anyway.. kinda sad if we lose even more triple AAA games and the industry went all sequels only..
And yes I'm blaming those so called "gamers" for not buying awesome games like Vanquish so we now are stuck with "amazing indie games" no one really cares about but we act like we care cause there aren't awesome games like Vanquish coming out anymore..

I don't doubt that the number of AAA games is declining. But I am skeptical that budgets have tripled. I'm no developer but that doesn't seem plausible to me unless they're comparing budgets of major titles to smaller ones. Guys from Epic Games seem to be the only ones claiming things like that. Maybe they just don't know how to maximize their money.

I'm not surprised and have been talking about this for some time now. With 1/3 the amount of AAA titles I don't see how PS4 or X1 would we can possibly expect PS4 and X1 to continue at their current sales trajectory long term.

I feel their only hope is to find the "Minecrafts" and get them to retail as soon as possible as to provide additional support. Most indies simply can't affect console appeal because they aren't at retail so no one knows they exist.

Well too bad 90% of the gamers don't want that.. there should be room for mid tier games with a cheaper price point.. the gap between indie and triple A is too big.. and it isn't being filled.. we didn't even bought games like Spec ops the line, Vanquish, Binary Domain when they dropped in price so I don't think they would have done better if they started with a 40 dollar price..

That was already discussed with the grow focus in Indies in the past... some criticized saying PS4 support to Indies was a biggest mistake but the Industry is moving in that way.

AAA games will decrease and Indies will increase.

Now you have a console machine with over 60 titles in less than 6 months in the market.
