Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Where do racing and fighting games rank today?

Most people get their rush/fix from fps today but before that it was racers , fighters and platformers.

Sales of all 3 increased gen on gen last gen just as fps was becoming mainstream/casual.

Will racing, fighting and platforming games still be able to do the numbers they did last gen?

Probably not... Fighting games are yawn these days and the only Fighting game that had a chance to perform well (SSB) is on the wiiU so even though it might outsell every fighting game this gen, it probably won't do anywhere close to the last gen

And same goes for racing/platformers

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I think Racing & Fighting could still do very well this gen.

Platformers are going to go down. As technology increases, platformers will seem too simple and not worth it.

Do you have the breakdown for racing fighting platforming increase last gen?
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it's potentially that wii disruption that boosted all three.

Those genres kick ass but eventually it'll go the way of the sidescroller beat-em up.

But on Nintendo's side it won't go away until Nintendo goes away.

Consoles: 3DS, Wii U, and Vita soon. Super Paper Mario fan.

Fighting games are the one genre i'm terrible at, so they are irrelevant to me, but i do like watching the tournaments. I love racing games they are in my top 5 genres. I hope the support continues to grow.

NfS + GT = about 17M lots of crossover  < MK Wii

Tekken + SSB ~11M some crossover < SSB

Platformers < NSMB Wii + Limbo + Braid (lol)

Yeah all Nintendo obviously. Hard to imagine a successful gaming industry without those three. Suppose its all FPS and computery (RPG) games now.

Gaming now is so diverse compared to the past. The variety of last gen was really nice and I see that continuing. Just because FPS games are the most popular doesn't mean other genres will go away. Most gamers I know play multiple genres.

The big thing here, I think, is that FPS has progressed so much. It encompasses different types of content, from Portal to Bioshock to CoD to Fallout, and it's gotten SO much better in the short number of years since it started getting popular. Last gen compared to PS2 gen is a substantial difference.

It always puzzles me the way some people hate on FPS. It seems so childish to me.

There will likely be a place for fighting games in the future. For example, while every developer isn't clamoring to cash in on the fighting genre like they were in the 90's, the tournament scene has grown tremendously, so there is definitely still demand. However, a few of the major fighting game developers in Japan seem to be struggling, like Capcom and Sega, so there is a bit of uncertainty, but hopefully they can pull through.

How about a racing/fighting hybrid? Could it work?

I've played a few racing games where their are guns and spikes attached to your car and those are pretty cool.
